- Pray for heaven’s help in raising children.

- Teach children their eternal purpose and family destiny.

- Be the example. Parents and caregivers are the most powerful teachers.

- Use the family to teach kindness, forgiveness, self-control, education, and honest work.

- Don’t let home become a “boardinghouse.” Stay involved in your children’s daily lives.

- Don’t follow cultural trends that weaken marriage and family life.

- If your family isn’t traditional, keep teaching and pressing on anyway.

- Let grandparents and extended family help fill family gaps.

- Love and be patient with family members who struggle or believe differently.

- Remember that repentance and growth don’t end with mortality.

- Model family life after Jesus Christ’s self-sacrifice and service.

- Do meaningful things together: gardens, camping, sports, recreation.

- Hold family reunions and remember ancestors.

- Teach practical skills at home, including work in the yard and home.

- Encourage learning languages for service and life.

- Counsel together as a family.

- Pray together night and morning.

- Worship together.

- Share family stories, traditions, and sacred experiences.

- Remember that what children really want for dinner is time with you.

- If there’s “no time,” turn technology off.

I grieve the passing of President Jeffrey R. Holland. Our relationship in education and Church service began more than 50 years ago. It was a long and loving relationship in the work of the Lord.

During my service as President of Brigham Young University, I had the privilege of inviting him—then a young scholar in his early 30s—to serve as Dean of Religious Education.

From the beginning, his influence strengthened the university’s sacred mission to unite spiritual purpose with academic excellence.

Over the last three decades as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, he lifted the weary, encouraged the faithful, and bore a powerful witness of the Savior—even through seasons of significant personal trials.

We honor his unwavering devotion, his steadfast witness of the Savior, and his inspired ability to strengthen faith and deepen understanding.

We thank our Father in Heaven for the blessing of shared service and for our united witness that Jesus Christ lives and directs His Church today.
