silena had just finished another conversation with luke⎯⎯the faint shimmer of the iris message still lingering in her mind like something she couldn’t quite scrub away.
there had been nothing new about it. there never was anymore.

Silena approached her with that expression on her face. Marianne was unaware of what was happening; she was unaware of the sacrifices made by her little sister, but she always wanted to be by her sister's side. Marianne was acting as if she were a mother -
⠀
she wiped at them almost immediately, turning her face just enough to hide it.
“ i’m 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒆, ” her voice gave her away instantly, soft and uneven as she shook her head a little.
⠀
⠀
“ maybe you’re the only one who could get through to him. ”
maybe there was still something in him worth saving ⠀.͟.͟.⠀ or maybe she just needed to believe that there was something in 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇 that could still be forgiven.
⠀
⠀
she could almost admire it⎯⎯the way the girl held onto that hope like it was something unbreakable, something worth protecting no matter how many cracks had already formed.
though silena couldn’t help but think ⠀.͟.͟.⠀
⠀
⠀
⠀ the question washed over her like a
⠀ cool spill of water.⠀ the type of feeling
⠀ as if she had just been shaken awake
⠀ in the midst of deep sleep⠀ ———
⠀ and maybe that’s what it is;⠀ her being
⠀ here at camp,⠀ doing her best to
⠀ ignore that the very people
⠀
the smile she offered was gentle, carefully placed. it’s easier this way. annabeth didn’t need to know the new version of luke she knows far too well⎯⎯the one in hushed conversations, in colder words and promised threats.
