Some people have been asking why @EquipFoods didn't have glowing colors in the @ConsumerReports article by @parismartineau about heavy metals and protein powders. Here is why:
1. They tested a batch of our chocolate flavor Prime Protein which has real cocoa, which has naturally occurring lead and heavy metals like many fruits and vegetables, but tested other brands vanilla or unflavored. This is a bizarre lapse in methodology if one knows anything about heavy metals.
2. See our recent unflavored 3rd party COA at undetectable lead levels linked as a comment to this post.
3. See our recent chocolate flavor 3rd party COA at 11.15ppb lead versus the 27ppb they claim to test also linked below.
4. As you see, all of the lead is coming from the cocoa (read: not the protein), an ingredient that naturally contains heavy metals, like many fruits and vegetables.
5. For reference, organic carrots test at 20ppb lead. Yes, our recent lot has 50% less lead exposure than organic carrots.
6. Our findings, which are roughly the same in every single lot we've tested via 3rd party this year, would put us clearly into their "safe to consume" category, even though this is consistently our highest tested product -- again, because it has cocoa.
7. This makes me question where they are getting this product from or their testing method as it does not corroborate with our own 3rd party testing. We are happy to provide additional units, or for a more reasonable comparison, our unflavored grass-fed beef protein.
8. Every other protein product we have would pass with flying colors because they don't use cocoa. Again, it is not the protein.
9. Regardless, every batch varies, especially with things like cocoa that are crops grown in different regions and times of year, with different soil leading to different concentrations.
10. Because of that and because we care about purity of our supply chain, we test every single lot we produce and every single product we sell and we openly share our COAs for anyone who wants to see them and have never hidden any result of our 3rd party testing.
11. We test not only for heavy metals, but for many other contaminants like pesticides, herbicides, glyphosate, etc. and come up incredibly clean and at the top of the industry.
12. As an additional aside, these were based on Prop 65 limits which have been known in the industry to be ludicrous and not account for naturally occurring food.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and please let me know if you have any additional questions!
