I can't stop thinking about this clip...
Bruce Lee talking about the importance (and difficulty) of honest expression of the self:
"It's easy for me to put on a show and be cocky...and feel pretty cool and all that...make all kinds of phony things...blinded by it...but to express oneself honestly, not lying to oneself...that my friend is very hard to do."
He makes the point that the ability to express yourself honestly is a skill that must be trained.
"You have to train, you have to keep your reflexes, so that when you want it, it's there."
While he's making these points in the context of his martial arts training, I think they have broad applications to life:
It's easy to put on a show, to walk with your chest puffed out, to get loud.
But remember: Insecurity is loud, confidence is quiet.
Quoting Denzel Washington in American Gangster:
"You're too loud, you're making too much noise. Listen to me, the loudest one in the room is the weakest one in the room."
It's much more difficult to represent yourself honestly.
To walk quietly, to be prepared for anything that comes your way, but do so in silence.
"Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far." - Teddy Roosevelt
