@michaelshermer@instapundit@daumkeziah Rule of thumb: no one who complains about cultural appropriation has ever created anything that anyone would think was worth appropriating.
@SandyofCthulhu Unfortunately, they're basically stuck with their system. Going to a purely phonetic system was considered, post-war, but it's impractical due to all the homonyms and needing to decide where to put in word breaks. Conversely they can't just use kanji because of inflected words.
War at the Journal
I’ve never seen a greater disconnect from reality in covering the news.
Front page WSJ: the caption calls the stabbing co-pilot “a rogue pilot.” Rogue? No use of the words “high jacking” or “terrorist.” Quite a cad this rogue.
Article says no clear motive but there are “troubling possibilities”
Then comes this doozy of a paragraph:
“Negotiations to end the war that Israel and the U.S. launched against Iran appear stalled, and anger runs high over Israel’s conduct in the war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.”
No mention here of Oct. 7th, Hamas or Hezbollah or Iran’s link to terrorism in the UK yesterday — clearly the US or Israel must be to blame for this incident.
Contrast the editorial inside at the same moment with the headline about how brave passengers averted a “highjacking” and calling the stabber a “terrorist” and putting it in the context of the Iranian actions, threats and history of terrorism.
It seems if you want the news straight you need to read the Ed page and I’m at a loss as to the game being played on the front page, but there are “troubling possibilities.”
Dude
A Muslim pilot stabbed his copilot and tried to crash the plane full of passengers
But @WSJ called it “an apparent struggle” with “both pilots injured”
Have some fucking moral clarity
The actual cure for student loans is simply to make the schools hold the loan.
If the school is on the hook for the loan, it has a real interest in a) charging a price that reflects the future earnings of students and b) taking reasonable measures to ensure the students succeed

what Bernie Sanders has done to make my life better:
My sister bought a starter home in suburban Ohio back in 2018 for $195,000.
Her property taxes were originally $2,400 a year.
Last week, her county completed its mandatory 6-year reappraisal and arbitrarily jacked her home’s paper valuation up by 42%.
Her new tax bill? $4,600 a year…. adding nearly $200 every single month to her escrow payment.
She hasn't remodeled the kitchen, added a pool, or upgraded a single square foot. She just painted the front porch and mowed the lawn.
When she called the county auditor to protest, they told her: "Your home’s market value increased based on recent neighborhood comps."
She looked at the representative and said:
"I’m not selling my house. I just live in it. Why am I paying a penalty tax on unrealized equity I can’t spend?"
Unrealized capital gains taxes aren't a futuristic policy proposal.
Local governments are already enforcing them every single year through property tax reassessments.
This mindless educrat nonsense drives me to an inchoate rage. I was reading at 3, and tested out at high school level my first day of school. Being an early and voracious reader was the single greatest advantage in my life.

I liked Arrested Development, both The Offices, It's Always Sunny. Saw: Mad Men (a few episodes, didn't care for it), Curb Your Enthusiasm (same), Parks and Rec, Black Mirror. Plus one episode of Schitt's Creek because Linda Thorson from The Avengers guested. I think that's it.
Succession was the most loathsome, zero redeeming value TV show I have ever watched for more than 3 episodes, and I have a personal vendetta of revenge against everyone who told me to watch it and then assured me it would get better
