If the argument is that frontier models require insane amounts of compute, that sounds like an argument for xAI, not against it.
xAI has one of the largest compute footprints in AI, other frontier model companies are already buying compute from them.

Cursor has the massive dataset that was already able to fine tune an open source base model to the point that it could compete with frontier models in coding.
