What’s this opinion based on? Did you watch the WWDC presentation? It’s an XR device but goes a bit further by which is why it’s dubbed spatial computing. As far walking around town looking for AR cues that’s another device entirely.
Hot take: The Apple #VisionPro, is not a AR device, its a display. Hear me out:
All demos are in-doors, and about giving you access to the same functionality as a Tablet, Computer or TV. Yes its stereoscopic, but so are some TVs. Yes you can take pictures but so can a tablet or phone. In all use cases shown it replaces things that you would normally do on an other display.
A true AR device needs to AUGMENT the real world. Show you where to go, where things are, explain the world around you, like putting names to faces, show you how to use/do things or add victual companions. The VisionPro does none of these things, that makes the promise of AR so compelling. Its about immersing you in your digital world, not about exploring the real world.
Apple has clearly spent a lot of money, effort, and talent on the VisionPro. But, for all the technological marvel, they have built the wrong thing. It doesn't add new uses for technology, It tapes the technology you have to your face. In many ways google glass, as primitive as it was, is much closer to the AR promise.
The price is not the issue. Even if it was 10$ and 5 generations refined, I would not strap it on when I'm out exploring a new city. That's the issue.
