Lars blinks at the sound of his name, pulled out of his thoughts.
"Oh, hey!"
He manages a smile, a little crooked from the surprise of seeing Lucian approach him.
"Good! Good. I was just curious, wanted to see what Pride looked like this year. You?"
he's got all of his friends around, but that doesn't mean he's not noticing the wallflowers.
namely lars and august . . . and a few others dotted along the edges, just enough away from the crowd to make them stand out to him, but not to be too obviously absent from the +
While he's still here to watch part of the pride celebration from the sideline, a strange unease makes his stomach twist at the sight of all these people, celebrating boldly.
Why is it that it's making him want to do the exact opposite? Hide and disappear.
About five different emotions pass behind Lars' eyes as he crosses paths with August, who actually talks to him. Most evidently, surprise, joy, and then panic–before he covers it all up with a small smile.
--
clumsily, he looks for a quick opportunity to just stumble across @deepwatcrs - long enough just to lightly say:
“hey. nice job on carmichael's test, by the way.”
maybe things are quiet between them, sure, but it feels like something he had to say, almost. even in passing.
"Hey. No one deserves to get picked on all the time," Lars corrects automatically, with a light pat on Kevin's back.
He says it for the same reason he jumped to defend Kevin without a second thought earlier. There is nothing more unfair to him than others thinking picking --
Kevin picks up on the lack of response Lars gives on that topic, and he drops it instantly. This doesn't seem the right time and place to make Lars open up about his worries.
"Yeah. But I only care about them making fun of August, he takes it so to heart. Them picking on ~
-- on a classmate is 'No big deal', something 'Just for fun', and there is nothing sadder than the person being picked on being convinced to come to the same conclusion.
He used to keep quiet and watch some of his friends do it too others. No more.
"If no one calls it --
[While he appreciates everyone noticing he Somehow managed a good grade on Carmichael's test, Adri offering a high five makes his smile climb higher. She's one of the few who know the extent of his struggles.]
I don't wanna be too happy, just in case it's a mistake.

[Well hey, it can't hurt his feelings if he also believes it to be true.]
Hey, thanks.
Not... really, but someone let me review their good essays, and other stuff like that. I guess it helped a little.
[Keeping an eye on Jolene as she checks out the list...
A part of him still aches to come and comfort her. He doesn't look her way long enough to tell if she's suppressing any stronger reaction, too afraid to be caught staring.]
[Finally, that seems to snap him out of his state of shock.
He returns a faint smile.]
Are we sure that's how numbers work? Did Carmichael invent a new system or something? 'Cause that doesn't feel real...
But hey, good job.
[Holding out his hand for a high five.]
Oh– ?
He checked out Vincent Chase's essay, since he suggested he looks at someone who does good. And Vincent kinda helped him study. So, uh... guess that worked out.
[Blinks.
He's staring in shock. That has to be a mistake, right? There's no way he got a B- when so many other people got worse scores than him, right?
Right?]
[Sitting in the sand, watching Adri and Milo and their antics...
Well, at least, it's making him laugh even if he feels a little out of place. Should have smoked too.]
