I feel like there’s an obvious historical point that is being missed about the whole "What Is America?" discussion, take it from a Frenchman: the whole "Our nation is an idea, all contributors are welcome" speech is IMPERIAL PROPAGANDA.

Romans, French, Americans, said this because they had an empire to run.

The rhetoric is useful to empire for several reasons:
- When you’re an empire you want to maximize the number of taxpayers & people who can be conscripted (which is what citizenship in an empire IS, NOT a license to participate in politics)
- This rhetoric is useful to coopt local elites of the new provinces
- This is not always true, but it can be useful to mask a reality which is the opposite of the rhetoric, ie ethnonationalist domination of the empire by a particular and specific ethnic group

It works because empires that are ASCENDANT and at their PEAK NATURALLY assimilate newcomers. Their culture is strong and confident and newcomers WANT to adopt it since it is so obviously successful! And there are obviously benefits to the empire to "skim the cream", and the cream in question (this is the crucial bit!) WANTS to embrace the empire’s culture BECAUSE it is seen as successful and the path to success.

This is the key lie at the heart of "soft power": soft power "works" BECAUSE OF HARD POWER. Your culture exports itself and is adopted because IT IS SEEN AS SUCCESSFUL AND THEREFORE HIGH STATUS.

This does NOT describe America currently. Yes, in some ways the American empire is still strong and in some ways America remains the most vital nation in the world.

However, as much as it pains:
- America is not at its peak anymore, relative to any point in the past 30 years. It may return! But it’s not there yet.
- For the past X decades American CULTURE has been systematically sabotaged by an anti-American Fifth Column.

As in the case of Rome and France, in a declining empire, the immigrant’s incentive and gut appeal is no longer to assimilate and add its strengths to the team, it is to strip for parts.

America is like a wounded lion. IT NEEDS TIME TO HEAL.

The idea that it can or should attract masses of immigrants, before it has fixed its INTERNAL problems, and created a renewal which will once again make its culture attractive and assimilation the default option, is very very misguided.
