Law Prof @LSELaw. Criminal law, punishment, sovereignty.
Academic freedom @acfreelse. Politics @peteray21
"While there's a soul in prison I am not free."
"Freedom of academic enquiry, thought and speech underpins everything we do at LSE."
A very welcome restatement of the esential condition of being a university from LSE Director Minouche Shafik. @LSEnews

"Confusion is the way that thinking feels."
This is a superb article that gets better and better. I think it may become recommended reading for my first class in every course! Thanks @economeager.
Assuming this story is true, it indicates that the Met is willing to defend one side’s freedom of assembly at the expense of the other’s.
This is another very disturbing marker of the accelerating decay of the state’s authority.

I wrote this for @LSEHEBlog on why academic freedom should guide LSE's approach to the fear, fury and grief generated by the renewed violence in the Middle East. https://t.co/AV5miKjxH5
LSE now has a staff network for academic freedom. Membership is open to all LSE staff.

That thing that never happens in academia, happened again.. Presidents of @AMericanAnthro and @CASCATweet deplatform a conference panel on biological sex in anthropology, on grounds of "harm to Trans and LGBTQI". An open letter from those deplatformed follows in next tweet.
@ASCphiled joins what is fast becoming a roll of honour.
@RethinkingEdu shames itself with a cowardice that manages to be both ridiculous and sinister at the same time.

The political class massively increased the number of universities and then subjected them to unprecedented bureaucratic control. Now they complain about students being “ripped-off” by a system they engineered. https://t.co/Ful2azLddV
The headline principes set out by @RussellGroup look sensible enough, but only if we rely heavily on in-person exams for assessment - at least until academics have worked out how to use AI properly and we come up with something better.

@Mattia800 Weak sauce. And different problem. Students are secondary problem. Institutional indulgence and encouragement (by management, academics, union) of intolerance is primary. No real recognition of that nor of the intellectually repressive climate this has in fact created.
This is sharp on the right's hypocrisy but complacent on the left's responsibility for the situation in HE. No apparent knowledge of the institutionally backed climate of fear for staff and students who dissent from conventional liberal pieties on gender, Brexit, migration, etc.

"Our core argument is that there can be no going *back* to national sovereignty. The tasks posed by sovereignty, for the most part, still lie ahead of us."

I can no longer place myself anywhere on this spectrum (including at 5).
Every position on this axis fails to represent my (quite strongly held) political beliefs.
I am surely not alone, even in academia.
Three quarters of academics at the most elite universities identify with the political Left. Just 1 in 10 identify with the Right.

King’s College London is a Stonewall Diversity champion. Their ethics committee did not approve me researching trans inclusion in sport as I had used the ‘insensitive’ word male. A cosy relationship with Stonewall is bad for science. https://t.co/d8bbgP2F9d
