A child of God, Grandma, Community Worker and campaigner. Stop The Towers Co-Chair and demanding research for Long Covid and post viral fatigue syndromes.
@AaronCa11 Over 63,000 people living with LC are unable to work at all (8.4% of the 749,000 increase in economic inactivity) whilst over 53,000 have had to reduce their working hours. 10 hours paid work tires me out.
Pre-pandemic 1% doctors were on long term sick leave. Now it is 18%.
@AaronCa11 I’ve been lobbying in Hammersmith for Long Covid Awareness Day.
A few facts:
In UK Over 2 million affected.
The ONS Winter survey 2023-4: over 178,000 new people developed LC from recent infections. Every new infection increases the chance of people going on to develop LC.
@LongCovidKiwi 1) Days? 5 x 365 plus ~70 days.
2) variable. Probably gradually improving and getting more done but the fatigue still requires pacing.
3) Prayer, pacing, deep breathing = calming the nervous system to get me out of fright, fight, freeze, flop.
For millions, Covid has chronically changed the way the body regulates fundamental physical functions, like digestion, breathing, thirst, immune defense + pathogen resistance, sleep, blood clotting, blood flow, energy metabolism, nervous function & more. #LongCovidAwarenessDay
There are a substantial number of medical tests / technologies that can objectively demonstrate & measure the physiologic dysfunction in ppl with Long Covid — including 5 eye tests alone! But still today, virtually no-one with the disease can access them. #LongCovidAwarenessDay
Started the day crying, seeing everyone sharing all their #LongCovidAwarenessDay stories. How many more will become disabled? Ignoring the problem won’t make it go away. We need real investments in research on sophisticated therapeutics. (Note the irony in the chart’s title)
#LongCovidAwarenessDay is a day where light not only needs to be shone on the terrible, ruinous and neglected impact of this disease but also on the tireless efforts of advocacy organisations like @LongCovidSOS and @long_covid, and of extraordinary doctors like @drclairetaylor
