#edu800fall20 The idea that prior knowledge (also in #coiro) correlates with efficacy and new literacies is an interesting topic and could possibly be researched to further understand its influence on learning outcomes. #mills
Interest-driven and friendship-driven environments incorporated into new literacy practices also relates to the “content of fluency development” which illustrates that learning can occur in settings in and outside of the classroom. #edu800fall20#mills#barron
@MSUErin I don’t think I started using the internet properly until college. I agree that there needs to be a class that gives students the skills and knowledge needed to properly search the web; scaffolding would be important.
@MSUErin The idea of co-learners connects with #knobel that mentions encouraging practices that invites gaming into the learning environment, which offers choice/autonomy, engagement, and skill set. It affords learning while engaging in a comfortable setting.
#edu800fall20#Leu It is essential to design content that incorporates digital tools that invite students to engage as "co-learners" in creation of meaning.
#coiro (Cont.) ... to understand the context of when the word is appropriate. This making of meaning supports reading skills that are integral to comprehension and digital literacy #edu800fall20
#edu800fall20#coiro since prior knowledge aids in comprehension needed for info seeking on the internet, it’s essential to present these skills in early education. It reminds me of the idea of AAC devices where a picture represents a word...
#coiro (Cont.) Though the student may not be able to read yet, they have been put in settings where the word is used and is appropriate. For example, at lunch a student may be prompted to use the word “apple” on the device, that gives the meaning-making needed
@joyfulledtech@ForkAndrew I totally agree. Professional development should be ongoing. I know that at the university and CC where I work they give a list of opportunities and allow for faculty/staff to choose the appropriate course that tailors to their work environment/interests.
#edu800fall20 I agree that education should allow for involvement that encourages students to “do their own thing” while learning; it grants comfortability and a space for students to control their own learning while accomplishing goals. #knobel
#edu800fall20 With new literacies being more collaborative, it furthers the idea of deeper connection through knowledge, interest and technology. #knobel
#edu800fall20#knobel The purpose of new literacy studies “..focuses on knowledge and skills in use in everyday settings..” reminds me of the learning ecology perspective which expresses that learning occurs in various spaces. #Barron
@MSUErin Erin, that is true. I didn’t think of it to that extent. It would be beneficial to education to conduct research that focuses on digital literacy and its impact on digital immigrants to improve learning methods.
#edu800fall20#Leu ".. it is important to understand that literacy is not just new today; it becomes new every day of our lives" — literacy continues to change which influences the ways that it can be used daily to further learning and relationship.
#edu800fall20#Leu Research has focused on older students when assessing digital literacy which is interesting, as understanding the development of literacy early on can aid in new, progressive learning opportunities.
@MikePar94496949 This is so true. As literacy and technology changes, we as educators and learners have to find new ways to engage with these changes to further interactions and understanding in and outside of the classroom.
