I have watched Kenyan election cycles long enough to know that voters are repeatedly manipulated using poverty, fake humility, tribal excitement and carefully packaged personal stories that have nothing to do with competent leadership.

Kenyans were once told that Uhuru Kenyatta was already rich and would never steal, yet his rule ended with endless questions about lost billions, he even looted Eurobond money to build Northlands City and gave corrupt bank NCBA tax exemptions, at a time many businesses were struggling and being harassed by KRA.

The same voters later elected Toto after turning a motorbike campaign into proof of leadership, as though poverty, cheap clothes and struggling to reach rallies automatically made someone honest, intelligent or capable of representing the public.

Some people even collected money from rival politicians and delivered it to a so-called poor candidate named Mutai, only for him to enter office and disappoint the same citizens who treated his financial struggles as evidence of integrity.

Kenyan politicians have learned that voters rarely demand records, competence or clear plans when they can be distracted with tears, wheelbarrows, motorbikes, torn shoes, humble backgrounds and rehearsed stories about suffering.

Poverty is not leadership, youth is not leadership, struggling is not leadership, riding a motorbike is not leadership, and looking miserable during campaigns does not mean someone will become honest after entering office.

Kenya keeps electing people out of sympathy and then spending five years complaining when those same people become arrogant, useless and unreachable after gaining access to public money, government vehicles and political influence.

An Election should not become another charity drive for ambitious politicians who have mastered the art of appearing poor, because public office is a serious responsibility and not a reward for the most emotional campaign story.

Fifteen years ago, @Coursera and online courses changed education. It worked better than almost anyone expected, expanding access by opening up where you can learn. Good learning needs much more than just a chatbot. Research shows that chatbots without guardrails harm learning. They help complete tasks and enable students to do better on homework. But cognitive offloading to a chatbot results in them being less skilled. And, you cannot always trust what a chatbot tells you.

In contrast, LearnVector will plan a path with you, adapt to how you learn, and patiently stay with you until you’ve mastered new skills.

One thing has not changed in all this time. People want learning they can trust: material that is accurate, relevant, and worth the effort you put into it. Anything less wastes the most valuable thing a learner has: time. Coursera has a trusted library of materials from authoritative sources. LearnVector plans to work with Coursera to bring this trustworthy learning to everyone. I'm grateful to Greg Hart and the entire Coursera team for supporting LearnVector.
