Until we have a nomination system for the Champiooships, we will have the same problem every year. Would be to difficult to have a point system championship for each division? At the end of the year , the horse with most points is the winner ? Let the horses do the talking !!
It’s disrespectful to Mindframe and Fierceness to see Sierra Leone on top of so many Eclipse ballots.
I understand the argument against Forever Young. He’s brilliant, but one U.S. race doesn’t make an Eclipse Award winner.
This award is about winning, not plodding seconds.
Sierra Leone had one win all year, one Grade 1, did not win the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and lost head to head to Mindframe. Find me an Older Horse Eclipse winner with one win all year. Good luck.
Fierceness is the most brilliant and talented older horse in the division. He won a Grade 1 and a Grade 2. When he’s right, he’s devastating.
Mindframe is the most disrespected horse in the division. He won three graded stakes, was the only older horse with two Grade 1 wins, won the Churchill Downs Stakes beating Nysos, Book em Danno and elite competition, then beat Sierra Leone head to head in the Stephen Foster.
After three straight graded wins, he was violently checked in the Jockey Club Gold Cup and lost Irad Ortiz, forcing him straight into the Classic, where he chased Forever Young and faded to fifth.
That does not erase two Grade 1 wins, three graded wins, and a head to head win over Sierra Leone.
The Older Horse Eclipse Award should go to horses that win, not horses that run well repeatedly.
This isn’t a consistent effort or try hard award!!!!!
The award is about WINNING!!!!!
Mindframe deserves the Eclipse Award for Older Male Horse.
What do you think???

@andyserling Should be 100 points for 10 or more starters, deduct 10% of points for each scratch bellow 10 .. etc, horses from abroad should have to have points also before taking space from America based horses, save on spot for a filly, if no fillies want to race , spot goes to next colt!

Should come from betting also, therefore everyone that participate in horse racing is envolved with the welfare of the horses. This is not only a breeders/ owner problem
It really is sad that we live in a world where we have to incentivize people to do the right thing.
If everyone in power that has financial controls in the industry did the right thing, the aftercare problem could be solved in less than 24 hours.
Entry fees / purses
Stallion fees
Registry fees
Sales fees
We could generate $20 million in new aftercare funding and no one person would feel it, but tens of thousands of horses would positively feel it and benefit.
Why does this have to be so hard??? 🤔
Cozmic One, the first foal out of champion Zenyatta, is settling in nicely at his new home at Old Friends!
The son of Bernardini successfully found a second career as a competitive show jumper for the last 5 years, however an old injury has officially retired him from riding.
