Yesterday marked 33 years of the tragic, sudden passing of Shalini’s father.

Him and my Dad were close friends since childhood, so he was an integral to our family too. A kind and gentle soul, he was a natural charmer, gifted with a magnetic personality, had the most commanding voice, a killer sense of humor and a mysterious aura about him. He was suave, loved his cars, his cigarettes, music and films, and had a childlike enthusiasm for new gadgets. A regular at the Bhagalpur Station Club, he is known among members as much for his style and wit as for his Billiards and Bridge skills.
As I have seen with so many such mysteriously interesting people, his life was short. I can write endlessly about him but it won’t do justice to the man he was…..mysterious.

My Dad has an old friend, who I’ve just seen at lunch. I went over and said hello - he usually drives a Rolls Royce and is a property millionaire. I asked him where his Rolls Royce is and he said “oh I’ve gotten rid of it - we’ve got a Honda Jazz now. I tell you what it’s a fabulous car. Really easy to drive and park - the wife and I love it!”

I smiled and commented on how reliable they are. I then said how’s the house (they have a big mansion) and he said “oh we’ve downsized and bought a bungalow. It’s got a small garden which is easier for us and it’s cheap to run and is open plan. We love it!”

This interaction has got me thinking…. Why are we all working so hard when in reality all we truly want or need is a Honda Jazz and a 2 bedroom bungalow?
