The Dithering
By @devharlan
These interactive works examine the ethical entanglements of tech and climate science — mapping where we stand (“You Are Here”) amidst hypothetical trajectories of apathy, denial, and systemic inertia. The aesthetic nod to early computing isn’t just nostalgic; it underscores how tech culture has historically dismissed or sidelined environmental urgency.
The epithet-laden quadrants within the works such as “Cyberlibertarian Protein Shake” and “WAGMI Clone”, use humour to critique and address specific ideologies—poking at techtopian fantasies and the ethical dilemmas of modernity.
Harlan pulls in miscellaneous digital artifacts—icons, menus, and interface elements from 1980s and 90s computing, which contrast the optimism of early tech culture with today’s environmental reckoning. These are organised as abstract forms, reminiscent of weather patterns or swirling eddies, algorithmically generated from models tied to the IPCC report.
