Since the Ebola outbreak was declared on 15 May, I have suspended all travel outside Africa to focus on supporting affected and at-risk countries.
I made one exception: a visit to KH Medical, currently the only company producing diagnostics capable of detecting all Ebola and Marburg virus strains.
Today, I am pleased to announce that we have secured an agreement to acquire 100% of the company’s available production capacity, enabling us to double the number of machines deployed by the end of June 2026. We also agreed to begin manufacturing these critical diagnostics in Africa.
As I wrote this week in the @FT, Africa’s response to Ebola must be driven by Africa, for Africa, with the support of trusted partners.
I renew my call to all countries: travel restrictions are not the answer. What we need is solidarity, cooperation, and investment to stop this outbreak and strengthen global health security.

A strong turn out for our second informal roundtable on unpacking resolution 2719, regarding the financing of #AUPSOs, with a particular focus on mission support modalities. It reflects the high level of interest on operationalizing the resolution, despite the challenges encountered in triggering the framework within the context of a specific test case.
Thanks to all our partners for the excellent collaboration in helping socialize key aspects of the resolution among Council members and other stakeholders. @AfricanUnionUN@RDCongoONU@LibMissionUN@SomaliaatUN@GermanyUN@UNDPPA@UNPeacekeeping
On 29 May, @SCRtweets (SCR) co-organized, together with @GermanyUN, @AfricanUnionUN, and the #UN Secretariat a discussion on the operationalization of Council resolution 2719 (2023), focusing on mission support modalities for #AU-led peace support operations.
Hosted at the @AfricanUnionUN and co-sponsored by the #African members of the Council (#A3), the event featured introductory remarks by Ambassador Zenon Ngay Mukongo, Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the UN and A3 Coordinator; Ambassador Thomas Zahneisen, Acting Deputy Permanent Representative of Germany to the UN; and Nathalie Ndongo-Seh, Director of the Western Africa Division in @UNDPPA and @UNPeacekeeping. Participants also heard presentations from @ZAlghali, Senior Advisor at the AU Permanent Observer Mission to the UN, and Vanessa Kent, Chief of the Support Partnerships Service in the UN Department of Operational Support, who shared insights on the development and implementation of AU-UN mission support modalities. The discussion concluded with remarks by Ambassador Mohammed Edrees, Permanent Observer of the African Union to the UN.
SCR’s Chief Operating Officer, @Klimenop, moderated the event, helping to facilitate an exchange of views on how the #AU and #UN can work together to ensure rapid deployment and effective mission support under the framework of resolution 2719.
We thank all participants for their valuable contributions to this timely and important conversation about the practical application of the Joint AU-UN Mission Support Planning Modalities and ongoing efforts to operationalise resolution 2719.

Good exchange between @DrTedros, the UN country team and humanitarian partners. Key to defeating the current Ebola outbreak :Government leads the response, partners support it, communities own it. Also key to leave something behind, sustainable investments. We are here to support

In this excellent paper, @elghassimw recommends practical steps to enable the @_AfricanUnion reclaim its
leadership on matters of peace and security on the continent. Hope it will draw the necessary attention in light on the ongoing discussions to reinvigorate #APSA.
It’s finally here!! Click https://t.co/0dVFvCROmb to read this much-awaited paper on ‘Charting Africa’s Agency in a Changing Global Order’ we’ve just released to mark #Africa Day today!
Grateful to @T4PAfrica for publishing my paper titled “Charting Africa’s Agency in a Changing Global Order”, with a particular focus on peace & security: https://t.co/fElFf5SHUG
The fact that the paper was released on #AfricaDay gives it special meaning. Africa Day, marking this year the 63rd anniversary of the #OAU, is always a moment not only to take stock of how far the continent has come, but also to reflect on what lies ahead.
In today’s troubled global environment, the need for #Africa to exercise renewed agency in addressing its peace and security challenges has never been more urgent. @_AfricanUnion already has the necessary normative, policy and institutional tools. The real challenge is their effective implementation — through renewed commitment, strategic clarity, and creativity.
That is the central argument of the paper
Happy Africa Day!
