A ₹17/litre markup isn’t a small premium—it’s thousands of rupees a year for many motorists.

If private fuel retailers can charge this much by branding fuel as “premium”, consumers deserve complete transparency on what they’re actually paying for.

Yesterday, I filled petrol at my regular Shell pump and was shocked to see the price: ₹128/litre.

I asked the attendant, “Is this E20 petrol?”

“Yes.”

Then I asked, “If Mumbai’s E20 petrol is around ₹111/litre, why are you charging ₹128?”

The reply stunned me.

“Sir, this is better quality, unadulterated petrol. You’ll get better mileage.”

Hold on.

Isn’t the government-notified petrol price already supposed to be for fuel that meets the required standards? Why should consumers pay an extra ₹17/litre?
