For reference, here's the sales of Sonic games in Japan. (Frontiers needs to be updated, as it reached over 120k last I checked.)
Adventure sold over 500k, so clearly Sonic /can/ be successful in Japan; it just comes down to appealing to gaming audiences properly somehow.
Slash collaborated with them for the pinball table because of his previous work with Jersey Jack Pinball.
He himself is a big fan of pinball, and according to SEGABits had worked with them on the Guns N' Roses machine, so he reached out to them to work on their next machine. Working with Jun for Sonic was just a coincidence.
I noticed there seemed to be some confusion during last stream regarding Kishimoto's "three-stage rocket" comments.
For reference, he's made this comment regarding his push for the Open Zone games overall, with Frontiers as the first stage, and the possible sequel as the second stage.
@sonicstadium I'm not sure about the numbers behind this; the video cites a "historical popularity index", but the definitions of this seem extremely broad with no actual sources linked. Kind of disappointing after trying to look for the origin of the comparisons.
@super_ult nothing but detrimental to its core audience.
To add another point regarding characterization being highlighted, is that by the same breath Shadow Gens is highlighted as consistent, Shadow 05 is as well in Iizuka's eyes. Audiences can disagree with the authors, or agree with-
@super_ult the uniqueness of each game's direction was it's strength, akin to what Frontiers became in contrast to the series' recent attempts at synergy, so I don't agree with his notion that the uniqueness of the projects were all bad. I get synergy is their priority right now, but still.
@super_ult This is true, but it doesn't relate to the quote here very much when these games don't break this rule.
Besides, there is discussion among the community that Sonic Team's rules for the universe are bad and should be changed/open for more interpretation. Personally I think that-
@taosmo357@unleash_yt Well tbh I don't really have the full level memorized, I was just judging it off the clip presented and what appeared to be level design leading into it previously. In the full context of the stage it is kind of unnecessary; the homing attacks used earlier aren't very demanding.
@BraviaGames@Mediac50 Tbh I don't want him returning at all; Shadow Gens was perfect, but even there they started messing him up with "wanting" to exist.
He's so integrally tied to 06's story and themes that taking him out of that and setting him up as a generic villain feels bad imo
@BraviaGames@faken_john The energy thing doesn't really work, since Mephiles isn't in an energy based form when he fuses. Plus, it's never stated in the plot itself.
I agree in the sense that it's the rational the plot likely requires to work, but it needs a blurb in the story for people to buy ngl.
@unleash_yt This isn't actually terrible gameplay considering that it's supposed to act as a mental break for the pacing. Shadow Gens stages are /long/, if they didn't have sections like this it'd be overwhelming for the average player.
The conversation around this level pack is a testiment to how toxic the fandom has become by residing on this platform.
Years ago any other less-than-fitting level port project would be treated as such, and be enjoyed by the fandom, but all that matters now is tearing stuff down
