Lovecraft is also hard to put on film because he didn't do characters. There's typically very little dialogue. He'll describe a conversation after the fact rather than let it play out in dialogue that would develop the characters. To put a Lovecraft story on the screen you need to invent a cast or develop some artistic workaround for not having one.
