@TheLengthsman Walked some of the towpath on a bitter winter’s day 30 years ago. Sun was shining. Utterly beautiful. One of the little white cottages was advertising as to let. Always wanted to go back. Thank you for the reminder.
Having survived @NationalHways intended emergency cull, #RugleyBridge near Alnwick was nestled comfortably in its cutting yesterday when we walked the @BorderlineGWay for the first time.
The craftsmanship is exemplary.
@archeohistories Yes, you are right. And in the depths of winter the little birds would peck through the foil caps on the bottles in search of some nourishment!
It turns out that the new “Street Trading Consents” licence fees will also apply to the little roadside egg stands with honesty boxes. 😡
Let’s be honest about who this ridiculous new licensing affects.
It’s usually small farms with a little wooden stand and an honesty box. Fresh eggs. Homemade jam, hardly a business.
Or someone who bakes once a week because they truly enjoy it. A few cupcakes, a brownie, something homemade. There’s very little money in it — it’s passion, not profit.
These aren’t big businesses dodging tax.
They’re not corporations.
They’re part of the fabric of our villages and towns.
Life is hard enough right now. Instead of supporting local initiative and community spirit, they want to slap a licence fee on it. That’s not encouragement — that’s discouragement.
And this is how it starts…
Price out the little cake cupboards.
Licence the honesty boxes.
Charge the farm gate egg sellers.
Before you know it, all that’s left are the big chains who can afford the fees, the paperwork, the red tape.
Same shops. Same menus. Same everything.
No character. No community. No local passion.
We should be protecting the small, not squeezing them out. Because once they’re gone, they’re not coming back.
LETS FIGHT THIS crazy new licence fee 🙏

This needs more attention. If Taylor Wimpey think it’s acceptable to fell trees during nesting season we need to make sure no one buys their poor quality overpriced homes. Tell your friends and family to avoid these ecocidal developers.
The minimum wage is around £26,000. The state pension is £11,000. And the elite talk about the triple lock? We expect our pensioners, who can't typically work, to live on less than half of the minimum wage. It is outrageous and cruel in my view. #skynews#gbnews#bbcnews
