In 1956, design governed advertising at IBM. By the 1990s, that hierarchy had inverted. This essay traces how and why it matters now.

@aofp_studio Not sure, it can't be commericially funded, thats for sure. Also, its complicated due to some potential gate keeping issues. ie. message board on Brand New is loaded with hot takes with people that lack "Credibility" whatever that means now
Real criticism in graphic design used to be a public practice. From Emigre and Eye to Cranbrook debates and Dot Dot Dot, discourse shaped the field. Today itβs mostly gone. Media outlets are just PR funnels. Not critical discourse. I'd like to revive this practice, whos in!?
@FartinMlores Dexter Sinister, Serving Library. Also, i think art and architecture have much more blunt direct critical work. I think we would all benefit from thinking our graphic design work wasn't so precious and not everyone needs to like it. Helps us improve if we get some tough feedback!
@eliheuer Itβs impossible to separate emotion from typographic form. The hand and eye always impose judgment. I donβt see why this copyleft, post authorship debate has any real validity unless the goal is to justify well crafted AI slop.
@eliheuer fair, but for those that care about craft nothing beats work by the likes Matthew Carter, Kris Sowersby, Rappo, Brunner Otherwise you have subpar knock offs, which there is a huge market for (and most fonts are that anyway)
First Hot take, Every studio is an everything company now. Strategy Motion, branding, type design. ect... Once we stack all these things under one roof, the work will never make it past a B grade. If you want A+ work collaborate it with A+ specialists that fit a project strategy.
@iamliam Art, architecture, interiors all have real critical publishing. Graphic design doesnβt. We need a space for open, constructive debate again... not just PR, vibes, or hurt feelings! its work, it could be improved clients could be more informed by this discourse! Let's revive it!
The thinking and work Iβve done over the last 10 years, in a typographic and graphic design context, carries deep gratitude to @zachlieberman (openFrameworks), @REAS & @BenFry (Processing), and JΓΌrg Lehni (Paper.js). None of it would exist without their vision and systems π
