@Shea_89#MUS2011F20 I never thought of that last part! Now that I think about it, I'm less opposed to a quota in this age than I would be at any other time, considering people can easily access whatever music they want, so a quota enforced on radio (presumably) would not feel as imposing
#MUS2011F20 I don't think it's necessary to enforce a quota of Canadian content because people typically find their music and other forms of media through social media and streaming services now instead of radio and TV. I don't think the quota would have much effect as before.
@sharonburge #MUS2011F20 I think it's a good thing to both promote music that is not what's usually promoted, and to seek out music from your own country, since you can learn about your history and culture that way. I just don't think it should be a mandated quota.
@BrandonLinthor2 #MUS2011F20 I agree that the original artist brings more emotion to their song than a cover band usually does. Especially if the original artist wrote and/or produced the
song, it must be deeply personal to them and I think that shows in the recording.
@MackenzieLovel5#MUS2011F20 There are songs that I actually prefer a cover version of, but if I heard the original first I find I almost always prefer it. It's interesting to see how different artists reinterpret songs though, especially if they do it through the background of a different genre.
#MUS2011F20 I think most people would rather listen to the record rather than a live performance by a cover band because it's not just the song they like. They like what that artist brings to the song in terms of style, flow, voice, etc.
@SpurrellFrank#MUS2011F20 As sad as it is, white artists doing a "white" version of POC music could be the only way to open a great number of people up to the talents of non-white artists, especially at this time. There's, as you said, a bittersweet feeling to this realization.
@SamJacobson19 I find that the original versions of any art (song, movie, etc) are usually the best version of that work in my experience. The fact that it spawned multiple editions or spinoffs means that it had something to give that people saw potential in expanding upon. #MUS2011F20
#MUS2011F20 I think music can still have value and be enjoyable even if it's appropriated in some way. However, it's important to understand this fact, so that history isn't erased and the proper artists are praised and remembered for their contributions to music.
@a_a_ronwinter#MUS2011F20 I think showing that he was willing to break away from conventions of what was expected of his genre, Ray Charles definitely attracted a group of listeners who admired his artistry. It's why he's praised even to this day, even if it was a gamble at the time.
@BrandonLinthor2 #MUS2011F20 A lot of popular singers even today have a special 'quirk' to their voice that makes their songs distinctive, even to people who aren't familiar with their discography. It definitely strikes interest in listeners.
#MUS2011F20 I think that Ray Charles could have chosen to use a ''breaking voice'' just because he liked how it sounded regardless of what genres it was associated with, as he wasn't concerned with staying bound to one genre or image anyways.
@hann_tanner#MUS2011F20 Streaming platforms like Spotify also mean that it's incredibly easy to share music with friends (just send a link) which further promotes the diversification of music taste.
@walshkyle10#MUS2011F20 Streaming apps have also made it way easier to actually search for and find the music, and made it a lot more affordable to do so. There's also a much more diverse catalogue of music available to people no matter where they are in the world.
#MUS2011F20 Recent technology has influenced the way I access and listen to music because of how extremely accessible any kind of music is, no matter the language, country of origin, genre, message, or performer.
#MUS2011F20 Recent technology has influenced the way people think of their gender by exposing them to different cultural and individual standards for gender expression. Representation is less bound to what is chosen to be promoted and more so what the consumers resonate with.
