Humans and bacteria share strategies to defend against viruses.
We wondered: could they use each other's genes? Yes, both can!
Bacteria can use human immune genes to defend against phages AND
Human cells can use bacterial genes for viral defense.

Just wrapped up an incredible week in Waterville Valley, NH at the Salmonella GRS & GRC. Inspiring science, great discussions, and the chance to meet leaders in the field. Huge thanks to the chairs and organizers for an amazing experience! #GRC#Salmonella#ScienceCommunity
Our (@GammonLab) manuscript on virus-host interactions & RNF214 is now out in @PLOSPathogens! Perhaps one of the coolest things we found was that RNF214 knockout increased viral infections, without altering IFN-Beta signalling or select ISG expression!

My lab’s first preprint!
We used functional metagenomics to identify phage defenses in human and soil microbiomes. We scaled these selections while maintaining accuracy, enabling us to examine 9 habitats for defense elements against 7 phages.

We've got viruses, we've got bacteria, we've got moths - heck, we even looked at cancer!
A challenging but exciting story over the last few years! A big thanks to those that helped make it happen: @ScienceyNina & @dbheisler 😁 Excited that our work is finally out 🎉
New paper from the lab showing how bacteria can teach us a thing or two about antiviral immunity! Congrats @Aaron_Embry_ on a great story!
