SUNDAY BANKING has happened before, but the context matters.
March 31, 2024 and March 31, 2019 were financial-year-end requirements. November 13, 2016 followed demonetisation. March 26, 2017 involved specific government-tax and year-end clearances.
But 27 September 2026 is different. The Government has ordered all PSU banks and RRBs to function on Sunday immediately before the 28–30 September strike, explicitly citing the need to avoid disruption from the proposed five-day closure.
So the irony writes itself:
When the Government needs banking continuity, Sunday suddenly becomes a working day.
When bankers ask for a five-day week, the same urgency disappears.
You can open the branches on Sunday, but you cannot silence the fight for 5-Day Banking.

FIVE-DAY BANKING: A FAIR AND TIMELY NEED
India’s financial system runs on the commitment of its banking professionals. *During national challenges—from the extraordinary workload during demonetisation to keeping essential banking services operational throughout the COVID-19 pandemic—bank employees stood firmly with the nation.*
They have consistently kept the economy moving when it mattered most.
Today, five-day banking is not merely about an additional day off. It is about modernisation, productivity, work-life balance and recognising the contribution of banking professionals.
*The Indian Banks’ Association submitted the proposal for five-day banking in July 2023. Yet, more than three years later, its implementation is still awaited*.
*We stood with the nation when it needed us most. Now, it is time for the nation to stand with its banking professionals*.
Implement #5dayBanking .
Recognise the contribution.
Respect the commitment.

Hello @RBI , a few simple questions on your approval to keep bank branches operational on Sunday, 27 Sept 2026:
1. Section 25, Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 expressly includes Sunday within “public holiday”. If 27.09.2026 remains a public holiday under Sec 25, under which statutory provision has RBI authorised it to be treated as a “working day”?
2. RBI itself has stated that under Sec 25 of NI Act, declaration of public holidays is a Central Government function, delegated to State Governments vide MHA Notification No. 20-25-56-Pub-I dated 08.06.1957.
Where is RBI’s statutory authority to alter that status?
3. RBI’s own instructions separately recognise “Sunday banking” while continuing to recognise Sunday as a public holiday under Sec 25. Therefore, does the 22.09.2026 letter merely permit banking operations on Sunday, or does it purport to change the statutory holiday status of 27.09.2026?
4. If it is merely permission to operate, what is the legal basis for compelling bank employees to work on a day which continues to be a public holiday, particularly in view of applicable Industrial Awards/Bipartite Settlements?
5. Finally, please identify the exact Section/Act/Notification under which the RBI’s approval dated 22.09.2026 has been issued and clarify whether it has any effect whatsoever on the status of 27.09.2026 under Section 25 of the NI Act.
Regulation cannot become legislation by implication. The statutory basis should be crystal clear.
I sincerely hope to get an honest reply.

You ask bankers to deliver more, serve more and carry greater responsibility. Then why deny them a 5-day banking week?
