Jaisalmer, c. 1326 — A second jauhar is traditionally associated with a Tughlaq siege.

Chanderi, 1528 — During Babur’s conquest of Chanderi under Medini Rai, traditions record jauhar followed by the defenders’ final resistance.

Raisen, 1532 — During Bahadur Shah of Gujarat’s siege, traditions record a jauhar followed by saka.

Chittor, 1535 — During Bahadur Shah of Gujarat’s siege, the second famous Chittor jauhar is traditionally associated with Rani Karnavati.

Raisen, 1543 — During Sher Shah Suri’s campaign against Puran Mal, another jauhar is recorded in historical traditions.

Chittor, 1568 — During Akbar’s siege and conquest of Chittor, the third famous Chittor jauhar is traditionally recorded, followed by the defenders’ saka.

There is something particularly amusing about watching him defend Babur while conveniently ignoring the Babur who wrote his own story.

Yes, Baburi was the young man with whom Babur himself records falling deeply in love. The Baburnama describes his infatuation in remarkably personal terms. Babur & Baburi were gay. History does not need modern labels to establish what Babur himself wrote.

But the bigger historical embarrassment for this argument is Babur’s supposed “Uzbek” identity.

Babur was a Timurid. Not an Uzbek.

In the Baburnama, he repeatedly distinguishes the Timurids from the Uzbeks. And there was good reason: the rise of the Uzbeks under Shaybani Khan was one of the great disasters of Babur’s early life. They seized Samarkand and drove him from much of the Central Asian inheritance of his Timurid family.

The man who eventually founded the Timurid Empire in small part of northern India had spent years fighting the Uzbeks, losing to them and fleeing from them.

So trying to squeeze Babur into a modern “Uzbek” identity is not merely simplistic.

It is the exact opposite of the world Babur himself described.

And then comes the part that is even more inconvenient.

Why defend Babur as though he were some benign historical mascot while stripping away the conqueror, the religious warrior and the iconoclast?

Babur’s own memoirs contain explicitly religious language about his campaigns. After Khanwa, he celebrated himself as a ghazi. He also records resolving to destroy idols, and his rhetoric invoked earlier Muslim conquerors and iconoclasts.

You cannot have it both ways.

You cannot sanitise Babur when defending him and then demand that everyone else forget what Babur himself wrote.

And here is where the present-day irony becomes almost irresistible.

On 30 August 2026, Uzbekistan; the country whose Uzbek rulers once drove Babur from much of his Central Asian world;conferred upon Narendra Modi its highest honour for foreign leaders, the Oliy Darajali Do’stlik, recognising his contribution to strengthening India-Uzbekistan friendship.

So while some politicians are busy rewriting Babur’s identity to suit a modern political argument, Uzbekistan itself is busy honouring the Prime Minister of India.

That is the problem with weaponising history. The dead cannot correct your politics. But their own writings can.

Propaganda Against Vishwa Hindu Parishad Over Durga Puja vs. Reality

1) Propaganda: "There should be no themes. Durga Puja should return to the old traditional style."

Reality: No one has said that theme pandals should be stopped. The request is only that Maa Durga’s idol should not be changed or experimented with. Pandals, lights and decorations can have any theme.

2) Propaganda: "Durga Puja should not be inaugurated by eye-donation programmes or lighting lamps. It should start from Pratipada according to the scriptures."

Reality: The request is simply to follow the traditional rules of the scriptures. Some Bengalis even hold "Puja inaugurations" during Pitru Paksha, before Mahalaya.

3) Propaganda: "Photography during the making of the idol should be stopped."

Reality: The request is only to avoid taking photos before Maa Durga is fully dressed and decorated, because some non-Hindus misuse such photos in obscene ways. Sunil Gangopadhyay had also written about such vulgar ideas involving Saraswati idols.

4) Propaganda: "People should not take photos of Maa Durga’s idol at Kumartuli."

Reality: This is not true. The request is to take photos after the idol is fully decorated, so that there is no chance of vulgar misuse.

5) Propaganda: "No theme-based pandals should be made."

Reality: Completely false. People can use any theme for pandals and lights. The only request is that Maa Durga’s idol and the Puja rituals should follow traditional rules.

6) Propaganda: "Pandal decorations cannot be made using shoes or torn clothes."

Reality: Yes, such a request has been made.

7) Propaganda: "Non-vegetarian food should not be brought inside the pandal or sold outside it."

Reality: Completely false. However, serving beef as Ashtami bhog would not be considered acceptable.

8) Propaganda: "Pandal themes should only be based on Sanatani culture."

Reality: The request is only to try to keep the themes connected with Sanatani culture. It is not an order. Playing azaan inside a Puja pandal will not be encouraged.

9) Propaganda: "There has been a warning to stop anything that distorts or goes against Sanatani culture."

Reality: No such warning has been given.
