Several students gathered at @KStateOlathe today for the Skills for Your Success workshop event. This event provides juniors and seniors in our 21st Century Academies with learning sessions on employability skills and allows students to network and conduct mock interviews with real business professionals. This was made possible through a grant funded by @OlatheChamber.
“We are probably one of the only districts around that has a full conference seminar day to connect students with community professionals,” Olathe Public Schools Community Liaison Heather Schoonover said. “It’s beneficial for the students, which also helps our facilitators but also, the feedback we get from our business partners is just about how impressed they are by these students.”
In the morning, students were welcomed by the dean and Director of Student Services at K-State Olathe. From there, they split up into breakout sessions. Leading the sessions were business professionals in our area, including employees from Garmin, First National Bank and Farmers Insurance. Topics included “How to Get and Succeed in an Interview” and “Your Resume and 30 Second Elevator Pitch.” After that, students sat down for mock interviews with a business partner in their desired career field.
“This has really helped me condense what I need to focus on to have a good interview and good resume,” said Eston Garcia, a junior in the Olathe Northwest High School Engineering Academy. “I know what I need to work on and what to focus on so that I’ll be more prepared in the future.”
“I think it’s great that students took the time to come to this and put a lot into it, and I think they learned a lot this morning,” Olathe Chamber of Commerce Chief Operating Officer Brad Cornell said. “It’s a great program. We’ve been fortunate in that we’ve been able to support this program for several years.”
