@rmuirrag @gggiants Teams don’t make as many of those deals now, but they did then. Heck, that same season the Red Sox traded two guys from that top 100 list (Anthony Rizzo and Casey Kelly) for Adrian Gonzalez (who was a one-year rental at the time of the trade).

@rmuirrag @gggiants For the six years the Giants traded away (one of which Wheeler missed entirely, he was almost exactly a league average pitcher (99 ERA+ during that time). That’s a valuable player, but it’s not like he was a Cy Young candidate during that span.

@rmuirrag @gggiants How good Wheeler is now isn’t material to the trade. They only traded the remaining years of control for Wheeler, not his post-FA years. He could have left the Giants as a FA just as easily as he left the Mets.
