To make just transition happen we need public finance backing, systemic economic reform, and a clear roadmap to end fossil fuels.”
— Friederike Strub, @RecourseTeam
COP30 delivered a major win: the creation of the Belém Action Mechanism on Just Transition. But a mechanism is only as strong as the systems that fund it. And this is where the alarm bells ring.
Multilateral development banks, expected to finance just transition efforts, still channel billions into fossil fuels. Also, 73% of their climate finance comes as loans, not grants, often tied to austerity.
A just transition cannot be built on debt nor coexist with fossil expansion. And it cannot succeed without public finance, economic reform, and a fossil fuel phase-out roadmap that countries can reliably follow.
The rules of our global economy are not laws of nature: they were made by people, and people can change them.
Reforming global economic governance is key to meeting climate & biodiversity targets.

Country climate plans are failing to protect forests or reduce emissions ⚠️
Why? Global financial rules which push governments to expand extractive sectors & fossil fuels, undermining people's rights & real climate action.

It cannot be ignored.

"The African Climate Summit showed Africa’s resources and ambition —now accountability and delivery must follow, because climate justice demands real finance and real action.
"We cannot solve a crisis we did not cause with loans that deepen debt."

We're here in Sevilla at #FfD4 to tell European leaders to stop 🚫 defending the status quo! They cannot be let off the hook.
The global economic system is deeply unfair. We need Europe and the global north to back transformative change and an #EraOfJustice.

Civil society’s #JustTransition priorities were officially tabled in the UN climate process in Bonn, thanks to relentless pressure from social movements, workers, and frontline communities. Now to #COP30!

At NY climate week in 2022, a senior person working in philanthropy said to me "we need to figure out how to get the climate movement stoked to push JPMorganChase to finance more windmills." It's been haunting me ever since, so we wrote a report and it's in the @FT (!) 🧵

Despite the @ADB_HQ's commitment global climate goals, its technical assistance is still supporting #FossilGas—a highly polluting fossil fuel that is risky for economies, communities and the environment.
