Everyone’s missing the root cause: some younger people don’t order takeout because they can’t cook—they order it because they don’t want to clean up afterward. The real expense isn’t dinner. It’s avoiding the dishes.

TO YOUNG PEOPLE ON THE $20 BURRITO ISSUE:

Understand that none of us are telling you to eat ramen and none of us are telling you not to eat $20 burritos.

You can do what you want.

We acknowledge that there are structural problems you face that we didn’t. We faced some that you don’t. There are things we can do to help that involve removing obstacles, as opposed to giving you free stuff.

We are not demanding that you do what we did. When we tell you what we did, that’s all we’re doing. We’re telling you what we chose to do. You can take it for what it’s worth.

At the end of the day, you’ve got to choose what you’re going to do.

What we are actually doing is letting you know that you are the one who’s going to have to bear the consequences of your choice, whether it’s saving money by eating ramen or impoverishing yourself by eating $20 burritos.

Choose wisely, and if you’d like our advice, we’re here. If not, miss us with the complaints about the results of your choices.
