Science Community of Practice at Orlando Summer Institute ‘23 ready to take some awesome instructional strategies back to the classroom!!! 🧪🥼⚗️🔬🧬🔭👩🔬#AVID#AVIDSI2023#AVID4Possibility#AVIDScience
@JasonAblin While they’re writing? No, there’s too much classroom management, 1on1 tutoring, & other juggling going on as a teacher. If you’re asking whether or not we do our own assignments outside of school, I suppose the answer depends on the assignment, but generally no, not enough time.
@AK_El_Jefe I’m not sure I see a clear detriment to student achievement in posting an outcome/objective. I too think an essential/driving question is better, but I don’t think there’s harm in the former. Any data, anecdotal evidence, or just some elaboration on your opinion?
Wetlands keep pollutants out of the #ChesBay and its tributaries, safeguard communities from
dangerous flooding, and can store 50 times more carbon than rain forests. Congress must do
more to protect them, not less. #ProtectOurWaters

@CNN Literally every paragraph of this article explains why scientists did this. If you’re concerned even slightly please just try reading the article 😩
@Ms_Durfee@Mick06340623 You do important work. Don’t let any of the negativity (esp on social media) convince you otherwise. Kids are resilient little creatures; if they miss your scaffolding lessons, they’ll find a way. Maybe with your help, maybe without it. Until then, keep slaying 💪
@MrJohnsonURHS @ChrisHSohn@Mick06340623 That sounds awful and I’m sorry you have to work under those conditions (I also feel horrible for the kids who are the ones playing catch up too) if your school/district’s expectations are to catch THOSE students up single handedly, that’s a diff issue which is absolutely valid
@sage_stage@Mick06340623 Oh if we’re talking about parents I totally agree. They’re often times the worst 😅 I suppose it depends on the school/district you’re in, but there’s only so much we can do to accommodate our students before it becomes an actual contractual workload issue.
@long_spoons@coachrcole@Mick06340623 Not a fan of the “my way or the Highway” attitude. To each their own, for sure, but I’d rather cultivate positive relationships while working within the confines of things I can control. Obv hold kids accountable, but OP post seemed very jaded & scrutinizing.
@ChrisHSohn@Mick06340623 That’s the thing though, the line isn’t mine to draw. I have no control over when my students are out of class, and moreover I certainly wouldn’t punish them for being involved in extracurricular activities.
@sage_stage@Mick06340623 I think the mentality of a student missing class for a family vacation “inconveniencing their teacher” is what’s wrong here. I do feel you with things being overwhelming, though. But that’s teaching- it’s super overwhelming a lot of the time 🫠
@Ms_Durfee@Mick06340623 I agree with the first part of your response fullheartedly. Most skills are developed over the course of a school year or in most cases, multiple years. Missing a week of school will not erase that progress, or put them in a hole too deep to catch up.
@Mick06340623 I hear you loud and clear; I totally relate to the helpless feeling of kids losing out on valuable instructional time, but I still feel like you’re glossing over the fact that most kids don’t really have a choice when it comes to family vacations. Feels like an unfair scrutiny.
