@RobBlackburnIII@YirmiyahuLaw@BBGreatMoments The rule protects the offense from losing base runners. It doesn’t apply here because the batter has the opportunity to run to first base. If there were runners on first and second the rule would apply to protect them.
@only27outs@BBGreatMoments Once the ball hit the ground the runner at 1st must go to second. The defense picked the ball up and forced the hitter out at 1st base, which then triggers the need to tag the original base runner out because there is no longer a force out in play.
