Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) was an Italian mathematician, physicist, astronomer, and philosopher, widely regarded as the father of modern science. He unified experiment, theory, and mathematics into a single scientific method, shaping both physics and astronomy.

He first gained recognition through his study of pendulums, observing that a pendulum’s period depends on its length, not its swing amplitude—an insight that later influenced clock design. He also challenged Aristotle’s ideas on motion, reportedly demonstrating from the Leaning Tower of Pisa that objects of different masses fall at the same rate, emphasizing experiment over assumption.

In 1609, after learning of the telescope, Galileo built a far more powerful version and turned it to the sky. He discovered four moons orbiting Jupiter (now called the Galilean moons) and observed the phases of Venus, providing strong evidence that Earth is not the center of the universe.

His support of heliocentrism brought him into conflict with the Catholic Church. Declared a heretic, he spent his final years under house arrest. Despite this, Galileo’s work laid the foundation for modern scientific thinking and our understanding of the universe.
