THIS WEEK IS the 10th anniversary of one of the most astonishingly successful predictions of modern journalism.

On May 13, 2014, legendary investigative journalist John Pilger wrote an article in the UK Guardian titled: “In Ukraine, the US is dragging us towards war with Russia”.

The US had taken control of Ukraine and would use it to provoke Russia into getting involved, Pilger prophesied. The result would be a Nato war in Europe.

“Nato's military encirclement [of Russia] has accelerated, along with US-orchestrated attacks on ethnic Russians in Ukraine,” Pilger wrote. “If Putin can be provoked into coming to their aid, his pre-ordained ‘pariah’ role will justify a Nato-run guerrilla war that is likely to spill into Russia itself.”

The resulting CIA-manufactured war would be portrayed by the media as a Russian attack. Vladimir Putin would be “subjected to a western media campaign of vilification”, he wrote.

TURNING HISTORY UPSIDE DOWN
How was the US working to trigger a conflict? Ethnic Russians in Ukraine (one third of the population were Russian speakers) were being treated so badly that Putin would have no option but to come to their aid.

History was already being turned upside down, Pilger argued. “We in the west are now backing neo-Nazis in a country where Ukrainian Nazis backed Hitler.”

Pilger had no doubt that the United States was running Ukraine, and America’s foreign policy was dictated by the CIA. Ukraine was run “as a CIA theme park”, he said.

BLAMING THE VICTIMS
When the Ukrainian government bussed thugs to Odessa, where they burned the trade union headquarters, killing 41 Russian speakers trapped inside (while the police watched without interfering), the victims were blamed.

The Wall Street Journal’s headline was "Deadly Ukraine Fire Likely Sparked by Rebels, Government Says”.’

Pilger described the British as frequent “collaborators” with the US.

Perhaps the most shocking thing of all is that the article was printed in the UK Guardian – a paper that today has, like the rest of the western media, followed the CIA script to the letter, beatifying the US/ Nato/ Ukrainian side, exonerating Ukraine’s Nazi elements, and vilifying Putin.

John Pilger died at the age of 84 in December last year, and was himself vilified by the western media for saying that China showed the world that a nation can rise peacefully without wars.

China's "predation"? Macron's selective vision

Emmanuel Macron did declare that China follows a "predatory logic" in Africa, accusing Beijing of transforming resources "at home" and "creating dependencies with the rest of the world." He thus promotes a vision where Europe is the force for good, against the rest of the world.

China on the ground: a track record of massive investment

Looking at the facts, the reality of the Sino-African partnership is quite different from the picture painted by Paris. China has been operating since 2009 under principles of non-interference and "win-win," building infrastructure without imposing the political reforms demanded by Western powers. The record is impressive:

· Trade: Chinese exports to Africa reached $122 billion in 2025, a 25% increase.
· Infrastructure: China has built or renovated over 10,000 km of railways, 100,000 km of roads, hundreds of bridges and ports, and 20,000 km of power and telecom grids.
· Contracts: In the first half of 2025 alone, construction contracts amounted to $30.5 billion – five times more than the previous year – often with much softer loan conditions than those of Western institutions.

Paris's willful blindness about its own practices

Where Macron's speech becomes unbearable is when you look at the record of his own policy. Is France really in a position to lecture others?

· Its own predatory logic: The historical plundering of resources, manipulation of the CFA franc, and constant political interference describe a relationship of domination that many label predatory.
· Its self-interested pivot: Kicked out of the Sahel (Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger) – booted out – France turned to Kenya. In April 2026, it signed a defense agreement and deployed 800 soldiers to Mombasa. Is it a coincidence that this massive arrival happens a stone's throw from the rare earth deposits of the Mrima Hills?
· Its displayed contempt: The public humiliation of African artists in Nairobi and paternalistic statements ("none of the Sahel countries would be sovereign without the French army") show the same contempt that France denounces in others.

The final word: the broken mirror of hypocrisy

To mask its own failures and its own appetites, Emmanuel Macron needs to demonize the competition. He cannot conceive that a partner might be chosen for its roads, its ports, and its lack of humiliation, rather than for its political demands.

It's not China that is predatory. It's France that can no longer stand not being the predator. So, Mr. Macron, before lecturing China, might it be time to sweep in front of your own door? The mirror of "Françafrique" reflects a far less flattering image than the one you present to the world.

When comparing France and China’s relationship with Africa, there is a staggering irony in this claim. France's own relationship with Africa, analysts point out, has been defined by resource extraction for French energy needs. Niger provided approximately 19-20% of the uranium that powers France's nuclear plants, according to journalist János Hajdu, with three mines that were majority-owned by the French multinational Orano. Researchers describe this as raw extraction: France takes the minerals, processes them at home, and sends nothing back but dependency.

Meanwhile, data shows that Beijing has been Africa's largest trading partner since 2009, offering roads, railways, and ports with repayment terms that Western powers haven’t matched.

Then there is the matter of the investment institutions Macron defends. Scholars, such as Nsizwazonke Yende, have documented how the IMF and World Bank forced Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs) on African nations for decades — imposing austerity, slashing public services, and demanding privatisation as the price of loans. The research demonstrates that these programmes systematically undermine state sovereignty and subordinate African economies within the global system.

France's own CFA franc remains the clearest symbol of this architecture. Fourteen African nations are still required to deposit 50% of their foreign reserves in the French Treasury, giving Paris veto power over their monetary policy.

China has its own problems, critics acknowledge, but a French president lecturing Africa on "predatory logic" while Paris controls the currencies of fourteen nations and extracts uranium for its own nuclear grid, according to anti-imperialist activists, is not partnership. It is projection.
