Parliament, State House and the Judiciary are not private estates. They are institutions established in the name of the Kenyan people and sustained by their taxes. Their security matters, but so does their accessibility to the citizens to whom they are constitutionally accountable.

The answer to criminality within a demonstration is to identify and prosecute criminals not to cordon off democracy and relocate citizens’ voices to some convenient distance from power.

If Parliament makes laws, the Judiciary interprets them and the Executive exercises state power, why should the citizens who confer that authority be treated as a security threat merely because they want to stand outside those institutions and demand accountability?

A democracy should not build moats around the institutions that are supposed to remain answerable to the people.

Security must protect public institutions. It must never become an excuse to place those institutions beyond the reach of public scrutiny.
