This bill erodes privacy and protects zero children. It is a short-sighted, child-shaming policy that pushes boomer-level-tech knowledge onto kids who will suffer without being prolifically online, safely and proficiently.
Urban land price is the impossible-to-ignore driver of the housing crisis—yet it is almost always ignored. As I argue in Broken City, speculation fueled by global capital inflates land values so relentlessly that they absorb nearly all the economic value created by density, labor, and location. Upzoning or adding supply often just unleashes "hungry dogs" of speculation, pushing prices higher instead of delivering affordability. Building costs haven't skyrocketed; land monopoly pricing has. Until we confront and capture this land value (via tax, public ownership, or regulation), true affordability remains out of reach.
The medium-density buildings with fantastic courtyards in Stockholm, Prague, Copenhagen, Oslo, Berlin, Paris, etc. were the product of building codes that capped heights at ~5-6 stories, required that 40-50% of the lot be left open as courtyard, required building be built up up to the front property line, and allowed builders to go to the side property lines ONLY if they built in masonry.
These regulations were designed to ensure good lighting, ventilation, and protection against fire. But they led to the construction of some of the most durable and valuable real estate on the planet because they provided residents with enough density for walkable urbanism and enough green space for livability.

As many of our migratory bird populations, such as the Eastern Wood-Pewee, Piping Plover, and Warbling Vireo, make their way back to their overwintering homes in South America, we would like to take a moment to remind you to turn off your lights at night!
An estimated 4 billion birds will have to navigate through cities, neighbourhoods, and other built environments. Sadly, many of these birds never arrive at their wintering grounds because they are killed or injured from collisions with glass.
As birds migrate at night, they use the stars to guide them. Bright lights from urban centres can draw birds off course. Once in these urban spaces, they risk colliding with glass.
Do you have outdoor lighting? Do your neighbours? To help birds bypass our dangerous cities, try turning these unnecessary outdoor lights off during migration in spring and fall.
A landmark in the Canadian film industry and a pioneering work of LGBTQ+ cinema, WINTER KEPT US WARM is credited by David Cronenberg as influencing his decision to become a filmmaker.
