Let me say this to us again, because I just saw a comment about class, once again from Nigerians who seem obsessed with it.

The "rules" of polite society are not (necessarily) an attempt to signal sophistication or snobbery. They are designed to codify proper social graces so that social interactions are smooth and there's little room for awkwardness or offending someone mistakenly.

Knowing them does signal status or sophistication but that's a by product.

To give you an example, if someone at your table starts eating with the wrong fork, the right thing to do is not to correct them in front of everybody. That is crass and embarrassing.

The right thing is to actually join them, use the same fork and diffuse the awkwardness with everyone else by saying "it looks like the salad fork actually helps you watch your portions better." Most people will get the hint, laugh it off and some will join others won't but no one feels awkward.

Later, privately you can correct the person as politely as you can without making it awkward. They'll be grateful for it.

If you think your sophistication is a way to embarrass or put people down, you're very crass, uncultured and uncouth.

Which apparently many of you are.

Had breakfast with some Haitians this morning and they were shocked by how much I knew about Haiti lol.

We talked about Barbecue (Not the meat but the gang leader of Haiti lol), the civil war, the politics, the chaos etc and its interesting that I didn’t learn any of these from books, but from years of spending 4–5 hours on YouTube every weekend.
