If ever there was a work of art that exemplified the famous quote from Marshall McLuhan, “the medium is the message,” it is a recent artwork from Vancouver Island artist Wendy Chartrand.

Chartrand has created "The Don of Dung" — a portrait of Donald Trump crafted entirely from dried horse manure — and unveiled it at this year's Sooke Fine Arts Show.

It didn't just turn heads. It sold to an anonymous buyer on opening day for $1,800, becoming the most talked-about piece at the 40-year-old exhibition.

Visitors initially guessed the unusual brown medium might be coffee or some other artistic technique. When they learned the truth, the reaction was somewhere between delighted and horrified — which, frankly, feels like the appropriate emotional range for anything Trump-related these days.

Chartrand didn't mince words about her inspiration: pure frustration with the current political landscape. "I was really surprised that it sold that morning, and really happy because I didn't want it back," she said. "Like, what do you do with that, right?"

The piece was deliberately designed to portray Trump looking down on people — a fitting artistic choice for a president who has spent his second term treating ordinary Americans, immigrants, journalists, and even members of his own party with open contempt.

"You can't do anything about things, so it's good to laugh about it," Chartrand said, embracing satire as a coping mechanism in an era when actual accountability feels increasingly hard to come by.

And she's not done. Chartrand has floated the idea of a companion piece: a manure portrait of Vladimir Putin, complete with a fittingly crude play on his name.

At a moment when Trump is demanding statues, golden arches, and diamond-encrusted rings in his own honor, sometimes the sharpest political commentary is exactly this simple: art made from what Trump's presidency actually represents, sold to someone who couldn't wait to take it home.

Sometimes art says exactly what needs to be said, and this time, it said it in horse manure. Sometimes the truth really does stink — even if someone was willing to pay $1,800 for it. Sometimes art trumps reality.
