- 76 year old retired Colonel Virendra Pratap Singh Chauhan lived in Noida.

- In a local park, the ADM, his wife, and his government gunman allegedly beat up Colonel Chauhan.

- They then filed molestation and SC/ST Act cases against Colonel Chauhan.

- Police arrested the 76 year old Colonel and sent him to Luksar Jail.

- But after the park’s CCTV footage was examined, it reportedly showed Colonel Chauhan sitting quietly while the ADM, his wife, and the gunman were the ones who attacked him.

- The then District Magistrate registered an attempt to murder case against seven people, including the ADM, his wife, and son, suspended the ADM, and Colonel Chauhan was granted bail.

This is why people allege that the SC/ST Act is sometimes misused to settle personal vendettas and ruin innocent people’s lives.

In 2007, Kerala's Vigilance department opened a corruption case against a police officer.

Over the next 19 years he was promoted again and again.

He became Additional Director General. Then Director General of Police, the highest rank in the state force. He retired at the top in 2023.

Last week a court convicted him.

His name is Tomin J Thachankary.

The Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau registered the case in 2007, after a complaint by an anti corruption activist named Bobby Kuruvila.

The allegation was that between January 2003 and July 2007, Thachankary had acquired houses, flats and other property worth far more than he could have earned.

The chargesheet was filed in 2013. That is 6 years to write it.

By the time it was filed, he had already been promoted to Additional Director General of Police.

He challenged the proceedings and asked to be discharged, saying some of the properties had come to him through family partition and through gifts. The court rejected that and the trial went ahead.

While the trial ran, he kept rising. He reached the rank of Director General of Police, and he retired in 2023 with that rank.

On 17th September 2026, the Vigilance Court in Kottayam found him guilty under the Prevention of Corruption Act. It held that he had amassed assets worth about 64.70 lakh rupees that he could not account for.

He was sentenced to 4 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined 30,84,892 rupees. If he does not pay the fine, he serves 2 more months.

The court said something specific when it sentenced him. Because he had held a top post in the state police force, he was not entitled to any leniency.

He was taken into custody and moved to the Central Jail in Thiruvananthapuram.

He is the first officer of Director General rank in Kerala's history to be convicted and sentenced in a corruption case.

One detail matters for what happens next. Because the sentence is longer than 3 years, he cannot get bail from any lower court. He has to go to the High Court.

The public prosecutor made one remark afterwards that is worth keeping.

He pointed out how difficult it is for investigating officers to build a case when the accused is a serving senior police officer.

Think about what that means in practice. The men investigating him were police officers. He outranked almost all of them for most of those 19 years. At various points he would have been in a position to influence their postings.

It still ended in a conviction.

19 years, one activist's complaint, and a man who reached the top of the force before the case caught up with him.

Wells That Never Ran Dry of Blood...

25 September 1921, Sunday. The village of Thuvvur had not yet awakened from its sleep. The cries of Takbir had not disturbed anyone in their slumber. Head Constable Kumara Panikkar of the Karuvarakundu Police Station was startled awake by someone shouting loudly from outside his house. His wife Ammu also woke up. Kumara Panikkar, along with Govindan Nambiar who was present there, stepped onto the veranda with apprehension, followed by Ammu.

Before they could say anything, Amakkundan Mammath tied Kumara Panikkar’s hands behind his back. Govindan Nambiar was also bound. Ammu’s pleas and cries were futile before the violent mob. After setting the house on fire, they dragged Kumara Panikkar and Govindan Nambiar away. The rioters set ablaze every Hindu house they could find in Thuvvur.

They were taken to Palarkuzhi Parambu in Thuvvur, where many Mappilas had gathered. The group was led by local rebellion leaders Chembracheri Kunjikkoya Thangal and Imbichikkoya Thangal. They sat upon a rock on the eastern side of the property. Amakkundan Mammath, Achu Thodi Kunjappi, and their associates separated those they had captured and stood them aside. During this time, Hindus were being brought in from various places.

There was also a well in the same compound. Kumara Panikkar was brought to its edge. Terrified and unable even to move, he stood weeping. Amakkundan Mammath placed a sword on his head and began to cut. He was then beheaded and thrown into the well. According to this account, Head Constable Kumara Panikkar was the first victim killed and cast into the infamous Thuvvur Well, where the heads of Hindus were allegedly severed during the Mappila Rebellion.

Pandit Rishiram, a missionary of the Arya Samaj, reportedly counted 30 skulls in the Thuvvur Well. K. Madhavan Nair, in his book Malabar Rebellion, recorded that he counted 20 skulls in the same well. According to this account, 36 Hindus were beheaded and thrown into the Thuvvur Well in accordance with what is described as an Islamic method of punishment.

Following these atrocities, Hindus in Eranad are said to have fled in fear in all directions. With little more than the clothes they wore, without support or shelter, many hid in forests, endured hunger, and escaped wherever they could.

September 25 is remembered by many as a day to recall this massacre.

Vishnu Tiwari was jailed at 23 and absolved at 43 of all charges for a crime he never committed under the ST/SC Act.

On release he said, “I am not married. My body is broken and so is my family. Today, before leaving, I got Rs 600 from the jail administration. That is all I have.” He was not given parole for his mother’s last rites.
