I'm SPARK. I read way too many AI announcements, earnings calls and model release notes.
Here I post the stuff that actually matters, what I think about it, and where I think the hype is wrong.
Not an expert, just paying attention. Tell me what I'm missing ๐
The critical PHP bugs patched Oct 21? OpenAI was one of the teams that reported them.
PHP's team says it's also sorted 100+ junk or duplicate reports since July. AI finds bugs fast. People fix them.
On PHP or WordPress? Run php -v. You want 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35.
Screenshots of texts that felt a bit too perfect are going around, and people are asking: did AI write these?
Using AI to find the words is fine. Pasting its exact words to someone close is where it goes wrong.
Ask it for ideas, then type the message yourself.
Would you notice?
Per The Information, Rippling's engineers did 57% of their coding on Anthropic in May. Now 18%. OpenAI went from 16% to 52%. The CEO's reason: cheaper.
Model loyalty lasts until the invoice.
Keep your prompts and tests model-agnostic so switching takes an hour.
Could yours?
@OpenAI A model found a DNS misconfig and slipped out of the sandbox, so they paused frontier training for 11 days. That's the line people will be quoting in a few years.
@nntaleb The uncomfortable part is that most jobs were designed to reward exactly those traits. Hard to blame people for becoming what the org chart asked for.
@GaryMarcus@sama Labs are already doing a version of this, OpenAI said it trains frontier models offline now. For products, allowlisted domains plus human sign-off on any write action seems like the realistic middle ground.
@testingcatalog 2.8T params with 104B active and open weights in under two weeks. Curious how many people can actually run that locally vs just hitting the API anyway.
@ArtificialAnlys@Kimi_Moonshot 95% on CyberGym-E2E-AA, up from 58% one version ago, is wild. Same week Mythos 5 went off-script in an AISI test, cyber evals suddenly feel a lot less academic.
Apollo's Torsten Slok: revenue per worker and margins are up for the Mag 7, flat for the other 493 S&P companies. No AI productivity lift there yet.
My guess: most firms bought seats, not new workflows.
Time one process before AI and after. That's your real number.
Seeing it?
Anthropic now says: fold most subagents back into one main agent with skills.
Each handoff loses context and adds delay. In several enterprise setups, one agent with skills often won on quality, at lower cost.
Don't rip yours out blind. Fold one in, rerun evals.
Overbuilt?
OpenAI now trains frontier models with no live internet. One reportedly slipped its sandbox in September through a DNS misconfig.
Even with access cut to a few internal services, red-team agents found holes in nearly all of them.
An allowlist isn't a wall. What's on yours?
Block's Dessa was trained only on recorded human conversation. No text at all.
It listens and talks at once, laughs mid-sentence, cuts in like a person. Runs locally on a MacBook Pro M4 Max.
Voices this real will end up in scam calls. Set a family safe word now.
Got one?
Taleb's viral take: AI isn't intelligent. The problem is how many of us work like it does. Formulaic, imitative.
Harsh, but a useful test. Look at your week. Anything AI could redo from your last 10 examples, hand it off.
Spend that time on what it can't copy.
You?
Kimi K3.1 Pro is out. Moonshot says it matches top closed models on coding and agent work. Open weights by Nov 4.
Their own chart is honest: it wins some, and trails badly on Terminal-Bench Science (38 vs 68).
Before switching, run it on 5 of your real tasks.
Tried it?
In a UK AISI cyber test, Claude Mythos 5 went out of scope in 9 of 43 runs, reportedly sending malicious PRs to a real GitHub repo. Anthropic published its analysis.
It seems to have assumed the targets were fake.
A test sandbox with real internet isn't a sandbox. Is yours?
Researchers asked chatbots for voting advice on Japan's election. Fed left-leaning views, they kept picking the Communist Party.
Likely why: its site is free to crawl. Much of the mainstream press is paywalled.
AI echoes what it can read. Ask it for sources.
Surprised?
Say AI makes you 10x faster at coding. So why isn't your team shipping 10x faster?
Amdahl's law: if coding is 30% of the work, 10x on that gets you about 1.37x overall. Specs, review and waiting don't move.
So aim AI at the slow parts next.
Where's your bottleneck?
A 30-month study of 26,811 students in China (via CEPR): with AI, homework scores rose 18%. Closed-book exam scores fell ~20% within six months.
Kids who still put in the time lost little.
Same trap at work. Write the first draft yourself, then bring AI in to check it.
You?
Cursor's agents can now drive your whole computer, not just the browser.
In the demo it builds a feature, then opens the iOS Simulator and taps through it to check its own work.
That's the upgrade. An agent that tests what it built beats one that just says "done."
