M. Music Therapy student. MSc. in Psychology and Neuroscience from Dalhousie University. Interested in naturalistic neuroimaging research and music cognition.
Now that my thesis is complete... Here's a pre-print on methods to detect ERPs during natural conversation during EEG hyperscanning. (And how to split a single EEG system set-up to record data from 2+ people.)
#music might be one of the earliest #developing and most accessible forms of #interpersonal#communication, providing a platform for studying early communicative behavior. Recent article by @trinh_nguyen9 @FlatenErica @Laurel_Trainor and myself https://t.co/T0rwSyacSC

🙏 Kudos to my fabulous team @quentin_moreau@anelleda_@DouglasCait@BioMDScience!!!
Clarification- I’m still going to be doing some neuroscience. I’ll be able to integrate music cognition research projects into my degree as well as summer internships. And- I have publications from my MSc to get out this fall. So feel free to send cool neuro opportunities my way!
I’m heading to Music school this Fall!
My oboe/music therapy ambitions were funded, my research project was not.
There were int PhD opportunities- but I couldn’t say no to an offer that lets me stay with my partner while I study and get to play music. #no#gradschool
Science opportunities: Warning, there are many competitive applicants and little funding.
Music opportunities : Hi- did you say oboe? We have $$$$.
This isn’t how they told me life would be when I was in high school…

@ac_debarros Me, trying to explain to people this year people were more willing to fund my oboe music than my research… And that currently due to the PhD crisis, my odds of success are at worst the same in neuro academia as they are in music. Sometimes, you just need a back up plan :P
@ac_debarros Wait until you try biking… SK friend bought a bike in Halifax without gears because “you don’t ever need them”. We had to teach them how to bike with gears and hills.

@JonathanWeinb11 The scary thing is that those who provide lazy answers to qualitative open-ended questions on MTurk are actually good at spotting and answering properly attention checks. This suggests that attention checks on MTurk are not enough to guarantee data quality.
@JonathanWeinb11 I have been running a lot of qualitative studies in the past 3 years, asking people to justify their answers, define things in their own words, remember and describe a moment. I had to reject more than 50% of participants on MTurk for lazy answers (copying from Internet,...
Original study: we cannot investigate topic X because people do not understand our questions about topic X.
My replication : people are perfectly able to understand topic X, just stop using Mechanical Turk.
Someone: What are your plans for the summer?
Me, who has had 4 anaphylactic reactions in the last two weeks:
Well, currently I’m only making plans for 48-hour time windows...
This is an under-discussed difficulty of academic jobs, too. The scarcity of jobs leads many to say “you go where the job is.”
That may be fine when you’re cis, straight, male, white, etc., but it’s > complicated if you hold marginalized identities, esp multiple visible ones.
How does aging affect inter-brain synchrony & communication?
