How you respond to this will be very important. Many friends who have left have felt the need to completely sever ties because everyone’s framing of “love” sounds like questioning their agency and decisions. It often sounds like “you are wrong because I believe and so should you”. Their parents have basically disowned them for differing beliefs rather than mourned.

I’m sorry he left and said those things. I hope you get the chance to talk to him and let him know he’s loved.
