A year ago I graduated from my PhD.
It took me five years to complete & I wrote many parts of my thesis whilst in hospital.
Disabled academics like myself often work on crip time. This doesn't make our contributions any less. And academia is a better place for us being in it.
Lovely feedback from a teacher on a post @naomicfisher and I did on behaviour recently:
“I shared one of your posts with my Year 6 class. I invited the children to discuss the texts and their own experiences in groups and summarise their thoughts on the subject. 1/
My name is Emma Dalmayne, I am a mother of 6, five of whom are autistic. I have started this petition to demand that Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) provide support for autistic children with mental health issues. My son was turned away despite being suicidal+
If youre planning to present on disability at ANY in person academic conference, I hope youre also reaching out to disabled high risk scholars in your subfield and offering to build hybrid access for them so they can engage too. 1/4
As a SEND parent first and a teacher second I am utterly horrified by some of the attitudes expressed towards SEND pupils by teachers on twitter over the last few days.
Is it any wonder that SEND pupils make up a significant proportion of school absence and refusal figures…
@the_tweedy Most autism stereotypes are actually signs of trauma/distress. Everyone stims when emotions are heightened. Everyone will melt or shutdown in enough distress. We meet that threshold quicker, and by (current) definition there's no non-traumatised autistic person. Needs to change.
What does the ✨dream school✨ for good #mentalhealth look like? 🏫
At our @EmergingMindsUK workshop, we asked young people, parents, educators, practitioners & researchers.
Now @LeanneWallker has created this INCREDIBLE illustration of the ideas! Please share widely 🔁
When it comes to work and school accommodations, it can be hard to know what to ask for. What are some accommodations that you've used or think others should know about?
@Emily1989Rose Can't possibly be the things they've spent the last 13 years closing. You know, like all the social care they're missing and every other public service.
