Indian marriage invitations are funny - They invite 500 people because not inviting 350 of them might offend them.

Those 350 come because declining might offend you. Both sides privately complain about the inconvenience. Then everyone repeats the same thing at the next wedding.

It's not really a marriage problem. It's a reciprocity and social-obligation problem, and Indian weddings make it extremely visible.

If I don’t invite them, they’ll feel bad - So I invite them. If they invited me and I don’t go, they’ll feel bad - So they come.

Now neither person particularly wanted the interaction, but both spent time, money and energy protecting the other person from an offence that might not even exist if both were honest.

Conversation goes like this: Yaar, Sunday ko uski shaadi mein jaana padega.

Nobody says, Yaar, Goa jaana padega' when they desperately want a holiday.

Word “Padega” is the evidence.

The language itself tells you whether something is desire or obligation. If attending someone's wedding feels like a task you have to complete, then for that relationship the event has stopped being celebration and become social compliance.

Plenty of people genuinely enjoy weddings. Close family and real friends probably want to be there. But wedding circles expand far beyond the circle of 500 guests of genuine emotional relationships. Then come distant relatives, former colleagues, neighbours, business contacts, parents' acquaintances, people you haven't spoken to in five years. At that point reciprocity takes over.

The relationship exists mainly because both sides are afraid of violating the ritual of maintaining it.

Invite people because you genuinely want them there. Attend because you genuinely want to be there. And normalize declining an invitation without treating it as disrespect.

An invitation should mean, I'd love you to come. Not, Now you owe me attendance.

The Srirangam Files:

In 1323 CE, just like today, crowds had thronged to Srirangam Temple for the Panguni festivities.

Mohammed Bin Thuqlaq was camping at what is Samayapuram today, near Trichy. He wasn't coronated as the "Mad Delhi Sultan" yet, and went by his real name Ulugh Khan.

It was a sacred temple festival for the locals, but for the Sultan-to-be, it was an expedition - a chance to loot and ransack the huge temple and strike fear at the hearts of idol worshipping Kh@firs.

Sensing that Khan might attack, the temple Archakar Vaduladesikar had made arrangements for the Murti to be saved.

Wrath had filled the Mad Tyrant Ulugh Khan and he screamed his orders. Trained army men behe*ded 12,000 unarmed devotees making the Kaveri river turn red with civilian blood.

It took weeks before all the bodies could be disposed. This bloody history, this "Srirangam files" won't be found in most history books.
But the Srirangam temple's own record book 'Koil Ozhugu' documents this incident as 'பன்னீராயிரம் திருமுடி திருத்திய கலகம்’.

We must consciously recall and respect the sacrifices of our ancestors. Otherwise, those who forget history are condemned to repeat it.
