@KaylaS58562 The documentary was pretty scary watching it. I learned the other day that you can request information from google and facebook all the data that they have on you and the different categories you fall under. I am terrified of that concept
@GudGradesAlways That article really changed my perception of not just social media, but my entire reality. I feel like I am constantly thinking of affordances of everyday objects now
The one thing that I will remember the most from this class is that when it comes to social media, we the people are the product. Our information and personalities are being molded and sold in a constant stream of attempts at advertising to us #450SocialSP24
@ahleighjohnson Social media has brought out in everyone the deep desire to be liked. It has led people to seek external validation that is genuinely harmful. It was mentioned in the documentary even something as simple as the like button can be used for validation. Is it the developers fault?
@baileeo01 It’s amazing that people can connect with others on the opposite side of the world. As someone who has done online long distance dating before, I think it’s a wonderful that I probably will never do again. It’s not the same as f2f dating like what was mentioned in Ch. 4 by Baym.
@DruT_BSU I think you make an excellent point. I think even as consumers, there lies responsibility with how technology and social media is used. While the developers may make the tool bright and shiny to get us to use it, it still depends on us using it in a healthy/appropriate way
In the reading by Correll, he talked about virtual communities and how they can be nearly similar to f2f communities, just a little less intimate as we aren't physically present. Despite the lack of intimacy, I think virtual communities are just as important. #450SocialSP24
@kenvillegas16 I think the amount of celebrities that are getting in trouble for past things are a great example of this. It makes me wonder what exists on the internet about me that I don't know about
@elllajacobson@Cmoore1970 I don't think f2f interaction could ever be replaced. There are too many subtleties in non-verbal communication that can't be replicated in digital communication
@baileeo01 I agree that you shouldn't care about what others think. It's impossible to please everybody and everybody will be a critic some way or another. Just be yourself and be happy
The concept of affordances introduced by Gibson made me really think about the idea that a variety of objects can provide a lot more uses than I can probably think of which is kind of mind blowing #450SocialSP24
@NicoShiverick As someone who hates talking on the phone, I unfortunately have to agree with the idea. However, i do not necessarily think it is a bad thing, I think it allows people to play to their strengths
@baileeo01 I believe that human connection hasn't been lost. The way we experience connection has just changed. The way one generation did something does not necessarily diminish the way another did it.
I think that these existential questions that are coming about from digital media just shows that it is still very much in the early stages of its life. Because of this, it is hard to predict how things will turn out and this uncertainty causes anxiety. #450SocialSP24
