For the Indian running community, the racing season starts with the Hyderabad Marathon (Aug) & ends with the New Delhi Marathon (Feb). Many detrain after, but if you want to return stronger and faster, this phase matters most.

Chronicling the life of the fastest Marathoner of India , Shivnath Singh Sir.

After surfing through Web, I didn't get too much information on his life .Then I contacted Shivnath Singh Son, Arjun Singh Sir, today .

My first question to him was whether the national record of fastest Marathoner at National Games Jalandhar 1978-79 was made Barefoot by Shivnath Singh Sir?

His answer was no , he wore shoes, but he also confirmed that the majority of his runs, especially on tracks, were Barefoot, including his gold medals in Asiad.

However , in the Olympics and National Games, he ran in shoes .

He told many interesting stories, including one of Japan, where the Japan government offered to give him citizenship and asked him to join as coach in Japan, an offer which he politely refused.

He ran and made records during the troubled time of War , Emergency and brought laurels for the country.

After serving Indian Army , he took VRS and joined Tata Steel as DGM Security at Jamshedpur and retired from there only.

His hometown is Buxar Bihar , but his family shifted long back from there, and Arjun Singh Sir and his sons family reside in Jamshedpur only .

But as a Marathoner, I think Shivnath Singh has not got his due . A movie must be made on his life to showcase his accomplishments in the field of athletics and marathon.

I talked with Arjun Singh Sir for half an hour, and I am glad he kindly answered all my questions.
