Every time I watch this movie, I do so quite a lot, and this scene always turns out to be the most profound and heart-touching. Jack Nicholson is indeed a gifted actor, and he steals the movie despite his limited screen time. What he says is a fact: armed forces are truly formed through the actual selection and training of officers once they join the unit. The grooming is so idealistic that, apart from patriotism and service to the nation, you see nothing else. You are made to feel and act as if you are running the nation. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Civil bureaucrats run the show, and politicians are more interested in accumulating their personal wealth. At the same time, discharging duties in asymmetric warfare can be a single mistake away from jeopardising your career and liberty. Officers and jawans have suffered such tragedies many times while fighting in Kashmir or the North East. Many have gone to jail, their careers ended, and families destroyed. For the unity and well-being of the country, it is a must-watch to understand the armed forces.

अब सोचिए कर्ण क्या था, दुर्योधन का गुर्गा, जैसे फिल्मों में खलनायक अमरीश पुरी का गुर्गा होता था वैसे. बॉस के लिए लड़की उठाने तक को तैयार रहता था अगला. लेकिन आधुनिक काल में कर्ण का क्या महिमामंडन हुआ है. एकदम टॉप क्लास. समझ से बाहर एकदम. एक फिल्म आई थी कल्कि, उसमें भी वही कहानी. कर्ण बड़े योद्धा थे अर्जुन से.

एक हुए राष्ट्र कवि रामधारी सिंह दिनकर जी, सर जी ने अपने जीवन में दो ही आदमी को महान माना, एक जवाहर लाल नेहरू और दूसरा कर्ण. दिनकर जी की एक कृति है लोकदेव नेहरू, और एक कृति है रश्मिरथी. उनकी और भी बहुत सारी उत्कृष्ट कृतियां हैं, जैसे उर्वशी जिसमें एक पंक्ति आती है कि मर्त्य मानव की विजय का तूर्य हूं मैं, उर्वशी अपने समय का सूर्य हूं मैं. ऐसी पंक्ति जिसकी तुलना आपको विश्व साहित्य में बहुत मुश्किल से मिलेगी. जैसे शेन वॉर्न की मैजिक बॉल, जिसपर उन्होंने माइक गेटिंग को आउट किया था. ऐसे में उनके साहित्य वांग्मय में ये दो नाम अलग से चमकते हैं. क्योंकि गले से नीचे नहीं उतरते. नेहरू और कर्ण.

महाभारत में एक उद्धरण है जब भगवान कृष्ण कर्ण के रोने पीटने से ऊबकर उसे बहुत सही से ज्ञान देते हैं, कि तुम क्या हर समय रोते पीटते रहते हो, क्या कष्ट और अपमान तुमने ही सहे हैं, कभी मेरे जीवन के बारे में सोचना.

अर्जुन को कभी राजा नहीं बनना था, युधिष्ठिर के बाद युवराज भी भीमसेन थे. अर्जुन केवल योद्धा था. उसकी कोई महत्वकांक्षा नहीं थी, लेकिन प्रकृति सर्वश्रेष्ठ जीन का चुनाव करती है, इसलिए अर्जुन के वंश का परीक्षित ही राजा बना. महाभारत की पूरी कहानी में वर्णित कोई भी महायोद्धा अर्जुन से नहीं जीत पाता है. एक प्रसंग में अर्जुन किरात वेश धारी महादेव के आगे नतमस्तक होते हैं, और उनको प्रसन्न करके पाशुपतास्त्र प्राप्त करते हैं. एक प्रसंग है जब अर्जुन द्रोणाचार्य जब चक्रव्यूह की रचना करते हैं, तब उनका सारा खेल इसपर आधारित होता है, कि अर्जुन को युद्ध भूमि से दूर कर दो, तभी मैं युधिष्ठिर को बंदी बना पाऊंगा.

वहीं कर्ण विराट युद्ध में अर्जुन से हारते हैं, महाभारत के चौदहवें दिन भीमसेन से पराजित होते हैं, अभिमन्यु से अकेले पार नहीं पा पाते, और वो उनके सारे बाण और धनुष काट देता है, सात्यकि कई मौकों पर कर्ण पर भारी पड़ते हैं, गंधर्वराज चित्रसेन कर्ण को पराजित करके भगा देते हैं और दुर्योधन को बंदी बना लेते हैं, यहां तक कि भगवान कृष्ण के पुत्र प्रद्युम्न ने भी कर्ण को हरा कर बंदी बना लिया था. आखिर में कर्ण अर्जुन के हाथों मारे जाते हैं, जहां वो हथियार छोड़कर रथ का पहिया निकालने का बहाना कर रहे होते हैं.

भगवान कृष्ण ने गीता का उपदेश देने को अर्जुन को ही चुना, जैसे महादेव ने माता पार्वती को अमरता का उपदेश दिया. इसलिए नहीं कि वो उनकी भार्या थीं, माता को कड़ी तपस्या और सौ जन्मों की साधना से गुजरना पड़ा.

राम पर, कृष्ण पर, अर्जुन पर इसलिए प्रहार होते रहे हैं, ताकि हमारे नौजवानों के दिमाग में नपुंसकता की खेती की जा सके. अर्जुन और कर्ण के युद्ध की केवल एक तस्वीर दिखाई जाती है, जिसमें अर्जुन पहिया निकालते कर्ण पर बाण तान रहे हैं. कर्ण जैसों का महिमामंडन इसलिए किया गया कि युवा पीढ़ी में दास्य भाव उत्पन्न हो, आदमी अवलंबन में ही स्वयं की उन्नति समझे. तर्क दिया जाता है कि मित्र हो तो कर्ण जैसा, अरे वो मित्र नहीं चमचा था, नौकर था, दलाल था दुर्योधन का. कर्ण को गाली देने के लिए द्यूत भवन में द्रौपदी को बोले गए अपशब्द ही पर्याप्त कारण हैं, बाकी जीवन में भी वो सारा समय दुर्योधन का मैला उठाता रहा. महर्षि व्यास ने पूरे महाभारत में कहीं भी नहीं लिखा है कि कर्ण अर्जुन के टक्कर का योद्धा भी था, कर्ण का महिमामंडन केवल वामपंथी प्रोपोगंडा है.

यह नाम कहीं से भी प्रेरणा नहीं देता, उल्टा मन में जुगुप्सा और जगाता है. अर्जुन ही भारत के इतिहास में सबसे बड़े नायक हैं जिनसे नौजवान प्रेरणा ले सकते हैं.

“Pinjra Todo” or “Family Todo”?

Rahul Gandhi’s latest rhetoric on the Indian family deserves far greater scrutiny than it is receiving.

He is telling young women that their fathers, husbands and sons are controlling them, that the family is a “cage”, and that this cage must be broken.

But there is one small problem: Indian women themselves do not seem to recognise the family Rahul Gandhi is describing.

At his Pune event, women who came on stage spoke about families that supported their education, sacrificed financially to send them to Pune, stood by them through difficult times and encouraged them to pursue their ambitions.

That is the Indian family.

It is not a cage. It is often the first source of emotional, social and financial security for a woman.

Of course, Indian families must evolve. Women must have complete freedom to make their own choices. Patriarchy, discrimination and violence must be challenged wherever they exist.

But liberating women does not require teaching them to regard their own families as enemies.

And Rahul Gandhi’s argument becomes even more curious when placed in the larger ideological context.

There is a global academic and activist discourse around “Dismantling Global Hindutva”, which seeks to portray Hindutva and, increasingly, Indian civilisational institutions through a uniformly oppressive lens. The language of “patriarchy”, “structures of oppression”, “dismantling” and the wholesale rejection of traditional social institutions often travels through this ecosystem.

Rahul Gandhi may not call his politics by that name. But when the family, tradition, Hindu civilisation and Indian social institutions are repeatedly presented as inherently oppressive structures that must be dismantled, one is entitled to ask:

Is this Indian political reform or the importation of an ideological framework developed elsewhere?

And there is another glaring contradiction.

If Rahul Gandhi wants to lecture India about women’s liberation, why does he selectively attack Hindu society while refusing to apply the same scrutiny to regressive practices that have existed elsewhere?

Why the silence on polygamy?
Why the silence on unilateral divorce practices?
Why the silence on practices that historically restricted women’s mobility and autonomy?

Women’s rights cannot be a selective political weapon.

India’s own civilisational tradition provides a very different story.

The Vedic tradition remembers women such as Gargi, Maitreyi, Lopamudra and Apala as intellectual and spiritual figures. Women have never been strangers to Indian philosophical and cultural life.

And modern India has gone much further.

Women today are property owners, entrepreneurs, scientists, pilots, soldiers, ministers and political leaders. Government schemes have significantly expanded women’s access to bank accounts, housing, entrepreneurship and economic opportunity. Women have received permanent commission in the armed forces and occupy positions of authority across the State.

That is empowerment.

Empowerment means giving a woman the freedom to choose, not deciding in advance that her family, faith and civilisation are the obstacles she must escape.

There is also something deeply ironic about Rahul Gandhi’s politics.

He speaks about dismantling structures while standing atop one of India’s most famous political dynasties.

He invokes the language of liberation while belonging to a family whose own political history is inseparable from the institutions of the Indian National Congress.

And now he appears determined to disown even the intellectual inheritance of his own political family.

If Gandhi, Nehru and Ambedkar were all wrong about everything Rahul Gandhi now seeks to overturn, perhaps he should say so explicitly.

Because what we are witnessing increasingly looks less like conventional electoral politics and more like an NGO-style ideological campaign against Indian society itself.

India does not need to choose between tradition and women’s freedom.

It needs to give women the freedom to choose their own lives without asking them to hate their families, reject their civilisation or dismantle their cultural identity in the process.

Rahul Gandhi can call that a cage.

Millions of Indian women call it home.

बाइबिल के अनुसार, ये वे कानून हैं जिन्हें ईश्वर ने मूसा के माध्यम से इजराइलियों के सामने रखा.

इस कानून में पिता को अपनी बेटी को दासी के रूप में बेचने का अधिकार दिया गया है.

लेकिन आज के ईसाई ऐसे धार्मिक कानूनों को स्वीकार नहीं करते. वे इन्हें सिर्फ ऐतिहासिक संदर्भ में देखते हैं. इन्हें आज के समाज पर लागू नहीं करते.

वे किताब का सम्मान करते हैं पर मानते नहीं हैं, न लागू करते हैं.

यही बात हिंदू धर्म पर भी लागू होनी चाहिए.

किसी प्राचीन ग्रंथ में लिखी हर बात को आज के हिंदुओं के आचरण का प्रमाण मानना उतना ही गलत है, जितना बाइबिल के पुराने नियम के आधार पर आज के ईसाइयों को परिभाषित करना.

अगर मनुस्मृति में लिखी किसी बात के आधार पर आज के हिंदुओं को पितृसत्तात्मक बताया जा सकता है, तो उसी कसौटी से बाइबिल के इन कानूनों पर भी सवाल होना चाहिए. और अगर आज के ईसाइयों को उनके प्राचीन ग्रंथ के आधार पर नहीं परखा जाता, तो यही उदारता हिंदुओं के लिए भी होनी चाहिए.

यही असली कसौटी है. धर्मग्रंथों के पुराने नियमों और आज के समाज के बीच फर्क करना.
