Two days ago we spent the night filming the last paroxysm of #Etna.
Great experience and a lot of high speed and thermal images of the lava fountain and of the strombolian activity.

Our @EnvUoA @ScienceUoA earth sci PhD graduates today included Paul Oluwunmi, Jie Wu, Sophia Tsang, Gianna Evans, Ayrton Hamilton, Ben Simons (also Alisha Coote not in picture) from gas hydrates to paleoclimate, to volcanoes!
Calling all NZ geoscience ECRs, are you a member of GSNZ? If not, why not? On Monday we are having a discussion about how GSNZ can better support out ECR community. DM us or comment below. @warrenseismo @AntarcticaBella @calum_ch@GIShaun @VargoLauren @hillman_jess @dread_rocks
Congratulations to Ben Simons @dread_rocks for successfully defending his @ScienceUoA PhD thesis on a Yasur view into Strombolian eruptions - more celebratory explosion footage please Ben! Also supported by Jen Eccles, Art Jolly, the @vmgdVU plus a cast of @EnvUoA students
@Tyranakisaurus We've got to get that footage of me falling down the flank with that expensive piece of high precision equipment 🤣. Love ya bud. We need to celebrate in person 🥳
#7DaysOfFieldwork (5): Helping @dread_rocks set up his PhD fieldwork, a 3-month monitoring of the steady-state Strombolian volcanism at Yasur volcano (Vanuatu). Burying seismometers, setting up thermal cameras, observing hundreds of eruptions, taming adorable tiny cats.
Soon to be crowned Dr @Tyranakisaurus stands proudly above a couple of his peers, the under examination @dread_rocks and the furiously writing @emily1ash
Some of my #thermal images and insights were used in a hot-off-the-press aritcle about volcanic #smokerings. Thanks to @SquigglyVolcano for putting the work together. Looking good!

Did you know that volcanoes make smoke rings? Although they had some ideas, scientists weren't quite sure how fiery mountains managed it.
Now, thanks to smoke cannon toys and a virtual volcano, they may have cracked the case. My latest, for @NatGeo. https://t.co/0vXl3pO7V0
