@JetBlue
Last week, stuck in beautiful Costa Rica with my family because of blizzard. JetBlue customer service was AWOL. The price they charged to get home was predatory. Now that I’m back, they have zero willingness to try to make this right. I was TrueBlue, they said ScrewYou.
@DanielHadas2 You are confused. The distinction hinges on the intended target and not the type of weapon. For example, returning fire to a gunman who shoots at you from a school is judged differently than aiming a gun directly at a child… or at least it should be.
@SM23094607@KeithEvans@CournanJane@VPrasadMDMPH@EBRheum@Plenary_Session I hear you, but this: profit driven corruption is a big part of the story with Pharma, but not the whole story. They really do create some incredible pharmaceuticals. So, if your rubric is to say NO to anything from Pharma, you’ll throw out some sweet babies with that bathwater.
@md_wallach @drbrignall The comments on that site are a big problem. Without moderation, the comments have been ceded to the extremist, which detracts from the site. But those comments don’t represent the full readership, and I say that from experience
@md_wallach "Everyone who disagrees with me is no different than the most extreme version of the someone who disagrees with me, so I can dismiss out of hand any nuanced disagreement."
@MichaelAlbertMD Agree. We need to change the environment. Recognize that the diabetes / obesity epidemic is an externality caused by industrialized food, similar to how environmental problems are an externality of industrialized countries. These costs need to be priced in to assess true costs
@VPrasadMDMPH That's awesome. In the time it takes me to compose a tweet, Prasad writes three journal articles, four substack posts and records a podcast. Keep up the great work!
@mattyglesias I agree. But I think I like readying non-fiction, because it makes me feel like I am learning something and being productive, which is itself mostly a fiction.
@VPrasadMDMPH@bariweiss@RoKhanna I know, right? Ro Khanna was great — smart, reasonable, and is clearly steeped in the issue of tech and democracy, which is so important to get right.
@drbrignall @md_wallach @GYamey @adamcifu@AlbertLinMD1 That’s great that you are engaging. People don’t change their minds on Twitter, but it really can happen out in the real world. Thank you
@drjohnm I get that. And yet I do think it is true that most of us draw conclusions by seeing what others think — most of the time, we outsource our opinion to the crowd. And if we don’t like the crowd…
@gorskon@drbrignall@AlbertLinMD1 @GYamey @adamcifu I agree extreme conspiracists on the site detract from stated goal of being "sensible." I know you come from a good place, and know I won't convince you, but Prasad's stated position on Covid Vax is basically that of Scandinavia. Calling that antivax is extreme and unhelpful.
@drbrignall@gorskon@AlbertLinMD1 @GYamey @adamcifu I agree completely. And this charge of a site being "Antivax-adjacent" is unhelpful - "contamination by association" is silly idea, reinforcing that this is about tribes rather than ideas, and completely cuts off the possibility of meeting people where they are at.
@AlbertLinMD1@drbrignall@gorskon @GYamey @adamcifu No, I'm certainly not a known/trusted voice who will reach millions and substantially move the needle. And I have no illusions re: convincing hardliners- such people are religious- can rarely be converted, but never convinced. But I do think many who are reading are reachable
@gorskon@AlbertLinMD1 @GYamey @adamcifu Your error is not seeing that the emotional motivation for antivax is distrust of the medical establishment, and at least some of that distrust was well earned (see Perdue), even if it has been exaggerated/weaponized. You going after those attempting to regain trust is misguided
@AlbertLinMD1@adamcifu @GYamey @Sensible__Med More importantly, the habit of evaluating ideas by who said them or who likes them needs breaking. I believe there many would've been strong advocates for early school reopening, if only that policy had not been voiced by Trump/DeSantis. Evaluate the message, not the messenger.
@AlbertLinMD1@adamcifu @GYamey See where you're coming from. As someone who's written for @Sensible__Med, I've been concerned by the more aggressive or conspiratorial comments. But I think open discussion is always best. And If there was ever a time when self-censorship was valid, that time has long since past
