I’m giving a public talk about bins! And not just one bin. Oh no, it’s a history of Leeds in five bins - from the Victorian ash pit to these wheelies.
It’s on 11 April at 1pm at Leeds Central Library. You can book using the link here:

#homefront article of the week: New Year’s Eve, 1940: The Ministry of Information’s Cyril Radcliffe tells UK listeners that the “People’s War” justifies censoring air raid details. Jessica Hammett & @drhenryirving detail the debate over the #WWII phrase. https://t.co/Cs6znNG5Gu
I’m really excited be playing a part in supporting the extension of glass recycling in Leeds. This film shows what happens to the glass - and features a few historical clips for good measure. Bonus marks for anyone who knows where they were shot!
Did you know that recycled glass can be put back on the shelf in 30 days?
It’s easier than ever to recycle glass in Leeds - at a bottle bank or in your green bin - and every jar or bottle makes a difference.

I’ve spent far too long tracking how local authorities responded to emergency laws promoting recycling in the 1940s. I still think councils are best placed to make operational decisions. Whether that’s about the number of bins or when they get emptied.

The government’s plans for Simpler Recycling are firming up, including a requirement that councils collect residual waste at least once a fortnight.
I think @CIWM are right to be disappointed at a move that takes decisions away from local authorities.

NEWS | Simpler Recycling: Defra sets cap on residual waste collections
The UK government has announced local authorities should provide at least a fortnightly collection for residual waste as part of Simpler Recycling.

@thomasforth Albeit with the Eric Pickles-esque effort to bind councils to fortnightly black bin collections. I think consistency in materials makes a lot of sense, but the tendency is still to meddle with operational decisions when the sector has said it wants freedom…
Do you remember when Leeds had a life-sized owl giving out recycling advice?🦉💚Here's a bin-tastic story about how Leeds got its first green bins ♻️🗑️in the 1990s, courtesy of a @leedslibraries blog about a talk from @leedsbeckett 's @drhenryirving
